Things fall apart, the centre cannot hold
A showdown between the Human League (really? So many names and they chose that? Why not Level-42 or Duran Duran?) and the dwindling band of not so merry mutants. So, in this all action war story, there's team "kill Hope Summers" and team "save Hope Summers". Which will win? This is one of the better Marvel events in terms of cohesion of storytelling. There's no primary story in one title with parallel branching story lines from other titles. The progress of the story flows across each issue irrespective of what title its from. Must have been a logistical nightmare with all those different artists and writers. The wafer thin kill/save Hope motivation will have helped. The previous parts of this trilogy (Messiah Complex and Messiah War) suffered from not giving the characters space to be themselves. They were all essentially defined by their powers. This book is better, maybe it's the larger pool of writers, but there's more of a feeling of who the characters are. Things like the revelation of the existence of the murderous X-Force to characters like Nightcrawler and Storm helps with that. Allowing moments for the characters to engage with each other, rather than just having one tactical battle after another where there powers are needed. The Necrosha event happened between Messiah War and this. Possibly worth a read as it explains why a crucial character in this book isn't as dead as they used to be. Or you could just go with it. We all know by now that characters pop back to life like they just nipped out for a pint of milk. So why care how that happened? As this is essentially a war story, like the previous two books, there are casualties. And this is handled very badly here. The wafer thin story motivation must drive on, so life altering injuries sustained by some mutants are treated as opportunities for quips and jokes. No doubt you'll find these injuries explored in some psychological depth in their titles after this event, but here they're dealt with horribly. Just bad bad bad bad writing. It's not just injuries, there's deaths too. Most of which are treated as, oh right, moving on. A way to show the transformation of Cyclops into the man he must be now, saviour of mutant kind. Again, just garbage writing. One death does cause a bit of soul-searching. It's a Marvel event, it's in the contract, the writers must kill someone of significance. The battle chugs along from one to the next. It's OK. The way of containing the action and stopping the rest of Marveldom, like the Avengers, getting involved is pure nonsense mcguffin. Again, this is writing from the very bottom draw. But it enables the X-Men to exist in their own little sphere of Marveldom like they always used to in the olden days. This helps keep the action focused. It works, it's just such lazy writing. The art is all ok, and having all the art be mediocre helps in a book like this. You're not left longing for one artist to get to draw their bit again. The only artistic issue is Hope Summers. No one seems to have told the various artists how old she is. Is she 16 or 36? Most get the teenage memo, but some clearly only know how to draw adults. X-23 gets similar treatment. This is an all action war story. The stakes are high. Sacrifices are called for. Sacrifices are made. War is hell, and Cyclops will marshal his troops for the final assault. And it's very hard to care.

Terribile
Stateci lontani
