Yakuza Zero, a modern masterpiece.
What else can honestly be said about this game that hasn't already been covered. I played the original Yakuza back on the PS2 when I was fairly young. I remembered that game being the first video game to ever make me sad, and bring tears to my eyes. Sadly I can barely remember it now, and hope to correct that soon with Kiwami. However as for this game. What I do remember from Yakuza 1, is made even more tragic and upsetting because of this game. This is the absolute best place to start for this franchise in my opinion. This series has been criminally underrated for years, due mainly to their unwillingness to import to the west, because Japan is weird about their video games. This game has almost everything you could ask for, and more. It has Karaoke, Disco Dancing, Phone Dating, Arcades with real, old school arcade games, an underground female fighting tournament you can bet money on where all the women wear blatantly sexual outfits, a fighting tournament for men you can participate in, real softcore porn videos you can watch at an Adult Store that the character masturbates to in comedic fashion, it has a Real Estate mini game with a side story attached that unlocks an amazing Fighting Style when finally completed, another mini game managing a Cabaret Club with basically a copy paste storyline, however this was by far the most enjoyable mini game to me. It has some of the most well constructed and well timed humor I've seen in a game for a very long time. I was laughing out loud on more than one occasion. This game also has one of the most touching, heartbreaking, deadly serious stories I've ever played, as well as basically flawless character and world building. It also oozes in the Cool Factor, but never sacrifices the stories credibility for it. The cinematic cutscenes are a master work, steeped in emotion and suspense. To explain why this is the case would be to spoil the story, and this a plot worth preserving for personal consumption. The games final cutscene is probably nearly 30 minutes in length, in order to wrap up every single character and plot thread in a nice, neat way, that leads perfectly into Yakuza 1, otherwise known as Kiwami. That may sound outrageous for some of you, the idea of a 30 minute cutscene can sound ludicrous. Let me assure you, that final 30 minutes had me in tears, especially the final 10 or so minutes. This game will punch you in the feels, over and over again, and make no apologies for it. There is no doubt this game will only enhance your enjoyment of Kiwami, which you will no doubt purchase after finishing this game. This is one the best overall video game experiences I've ever had the privilege to enjoy, and 5 Stars does not begin to describe just how great I think this game is. Do yourself a favor, and buy this game.

All The Stars
125 hours, I've beaten the story and am just finishing up some post-game hoopla to prep my clear save data for the new game plus. This was the first Yakuza game I've ever played and I've been playing games since '85. Been following the Yakuza news on Siliconera, the metacritic hit so positive on this I decided to take a look. Some youtube guys were showing off all the sexy minigames, and I was just coming off Valkyrie Drive, so I'm not ashamed to say that Catfight Club, et al... peaked my interest. Turns out that Yakuza is very Persona-esque, which was a very unexpected surprise. Except that the story is japanese crime drama, very well done, kind of reminded me of Oldboy. Like if you put Park Chan-wook and John Woo in a blender with a couple of the Dead or Alive beach volleyball girls and an entire minigame collection and hit frappe. Action, romance, the wife kept turning off her sodapop games to watch me play and help run the cabaret club and find the telephone cards and grind the arcade games. I highly recommend a quality wife if you're going for completion. Cabaret club, real estate royale, the funny substories, the 30 second videos of japanese pornstar girls in bikinis playing with balloon animals, this is what Sega does that nintendon't. Bowling was fun. Poker, blackjack. The equipment searches, crafting, leveling the skill trees. Mr shakedown. Fight club! Darts, fishing. I liked that you can customize the appearance of your hostess girls and that's how they look when you go on disco dates. Karaoke, while not my thing, was a thing to see. Racing pocket circuit cars was kind of fun, collecting parts. And the telephone club hook-up game, like old school tinder in japan of '88. This is video games the way they were meant to be played. So many diversions, and it never felt like the side stuff hurt the pace of the main story. All the characters were so great, with so much character, makes Bioware look like high school community theater. Now it wasn't Witcher III good. There was no nudity. Not enough blood. No Ciri, Yen, Triss, etc... depth of romance. Koi-koi is no japanese gwent. Not enough messed up shenanigans. Although it got pretty damn close. I mean this wasn't full-on Battle Royale, it was more like Red Cliff, but if the future Yakuza games can hit this type of content and quality, then I'm all-in. Senran Kagura is the type of tone a lot of the fun parts had. Some Saints Row The Third. Almost a little Kung Fu Hustle. When I'm done with Nier Automata and Persona 5, and its the dog days of summer, Yakuza 0 ng+ is going to be a beautiful pina colada. Very few video games come along and give you as much as Yakuza 0 does. I think they might be onto something here.

Let's Hop in the Time Machine and Head Back to 1988 Japan!
Intro: Boy, what an experience this game was! I just finished my first playthrough, with it clocking in at around 78 hours, and I had a hell of a time exploring Kamurocho and Sotenbori. There were thrills, chills, and a lot dudes getting their faces beaten in. Now sit down children, and let me tell you the tale of how Kazama Kiryu and Goro Majima turned themselves into the Dragon of Dojima and Mad Dog of Shimano. Story: Our story begins by rewinding the clock from our modern day to Japan in the late 1980's. This is the time of Japan's bubble economy where drug and prostitution was being used to finance classic anime and video games. Cash rules everyone and everything, and there's always more to be earned through whatever means. We start with fresh-faced yakuza member Kazama Kiryu beating the hell out of a man in an empty lot. Kiryu leaves the man bloodied, but alive. The next morning Kiryu sees that this man has been shot dead and he's the prime suspect and in hot water with his yakuza organization. Meanwhile in Osaka, Goro Majima is the manager of the wildly successful Cabaret Grand. This is but a gilded cage for Majima as he's still in trouble for disobeying orders. Majima is under constant surveillance to make sure he doesn't leave Osaka. Then one day he is given the opportunity to get by into his organization's good graces by performing a hit. Both of these events will spiral out of control for these men as they face insurmountable odds and we the players are treated to one of the best stories in gaming. There are too many twists, turns, and plot twists to count as the plot winds down. If you're just doing the main story, I estimate you're in for between 20-30 hours. As you'll note from my preamble, I said I played 78 hours, so where did the rest go. I'll answer that in another paragraph, but let's get down to the meat of a game, the gameplay. Gameplay: At its heart, the Yakuza series is a 3D brawler, and man do you do a lot of brawling in this game. Both characters have three different fighting styles to choose from in battle. Kiryu has Thug, Rush, and Beast style, while Majima has Thug, Dancer, and Slugger style. Kiryu's Thug style is an unrefined version of what would be his style in the later games. Rush style is like an agile boxer, and the one I found the most useful in the end game. Beast style has Kiryu picking up weapons with every attack and battering his opponents with. Majima thug style is similar to Kiryu's while his dancer style has him rolling on the floor, striking stylish poses, and doing crazy moves. His slugger style sees Majima using his baseball bat to punish all enemies. The combo system is done by mixing light an heavy attacks. The real star of the shows are the Heat Moves! If you get an opponent in a specific spot, press triangle to perform an insane move that will devastate anyone. These moves are brutal and will probably make you flinch at a few of them! When not beating in the face of every nameless goon in Japan, you're roving around the district of Kamurocho or Sotenbori. Notice the word district instead of city. These games have a much smaller open world then most games, though I don't feel like that detracts from the world. The worlds are small, but you get to know them incredibly well by the end of your game. The game worlds are covered with vibrant colors to get that 80's feel. With the story and gameplay out of the way, what's left to talk about in Yakuza 0? Side-Missions/Activities: The side content of Yakuza 0 is the true star of the game! There are 100 side missions for Kazama & Majima to accomplish, some of which include invading a Scientology-like cult, taking part in a risky drug test, and protecting a Michael Jackson parody from zombies in his latest music video. These quests can be anything from funny, a little sad, or sheer craziness. Beyond that are the 80's arcade games to play, RC cars to race, disco songs to be danced to, and so much more! You will sink so much time into these side activities and mini-games. There are also the businesses that both characters run which are another time sink. Kiryu runs a real estate agency and buys businesses around Kamurocho for a bigger payout. This was the lesser of the two as it was mostly waiting for a meter to fill, but Majima's business could be it's own game. Majima runs a hostess club, and it was a lot of fun to do. I was always going back for more time at the club, and was kinda sad to conclude the hostess club story. All of this stuff is 100% optional, but you would be severely depriving yourself of the majority of this game if you did. Conclusion: Yakuza 0 is something that doesn't come along very often. We fans of this series had to beg and fight for the Yakuza 5, and only ended up with a digital only version. Seeing this game's runaway success and glowing reviews makes you feel good inside. It's like seeing a runner struggling to keep up with the pack get a boost of speed and go on to win the race. The game may have a few flaws in it's graphical quality, but everything else is perfect. Even if you just play the story mode, I guarantee you'll be entertained all the way through and have a crazy fun time. For those who dive deep into the world of Majima and Kiryu, you'll discover one of the most wonderful, heartfelt, and optimistic games in history. This is my favorite game since I played Witcher 3, and proof that the PS4 needs more killer exclusives like this. Do yourself and your Playstation a favor, and buy this game to get an experience that you've never had before!

Think Grand Theft Auto type world, Sleeping Dogs style fighting gameplay, Final Fantasy type story. Great game!
Yakuza 0 is a mix of a Grand Theft Auto type world (albeit quite a bit smaller) with Sleeping Dogs type fighting (albeit a little more arcade-like). This description can tie to pretty much any Yakuza game released since Yakuza 3. However, having played both Yakuza 3 and 4, the fighting system has been fleshed out a bit more with different types of fighting styles that you can skill up. If you've never played a Yakuza game, fair warning, this game can get pretty graphic with the blood and gore (though Sega has now included an option for you to turn the bloodshed to only a mild amount) but if you can get passed that, you'll feel really gratified when you get out on to the streets and start to unleash some really devastating looking combos. The story of the Yakuza games have always been stellar and this one is no different. Yakuza 0 is a prequel to the rest of the Yakuza games so this is a good place to start if you're new to the series as it'll flesh out the life of two of the main characters in the rest of the Yakuza games. As with all Yakuza games, expect A LOT of cut scenes and dialogue (think Final Fantasy). If cut scenes aren't for you, this isn't the game for you. The game also starts out a little bit slow but if you stick with it passed the tutorials and get an hour or so into the game, you won't be disappointed as it starts to speed up. You'll be enamored in the story and will soon find yourself staying up to play this game so that you can find out about the next part of the story! I've been keeping up with the last few Yakuza games as they've come out in the United States and continually hoped for more Yakuza games to be localized as I loved both Yakuza 3 and 4 (PS3). To be honest, there wasn't much hype for Yakuza 0 out here in the States and I did not realize they were releasing a Yakuza game until about 2 months ago and I had it pre-ordered since I knew it was coming. I'm definitely not disappointed, it's a great buy for newbies to the Yakuza series and I'd say a must buy to diehard Sega Yakuza fans (though I probably shouldn't have to tell you to buy it if you're a diehard!).

Good entry point to the series
I had never played a Yakuza game before and I was looking for a good way to be introduced to the series. If the remaining games are anything like this one, then I am looking forward to the subsequent entries. The story can be a little melodramatic at times, but that is part of the charm (it will start to grow on you). I was also surprised at the sense of humor in this game. More of the side quests are very entertaining and are well written. There is a lot to do in the game and various mini games for you to engage in. There were two rhythm heavy mini games which were not my forte, but fun to watch. I also spent quite a bit of time at the slot car races then I would like to admit. Combat has a lot of depth, but I found myself relying on a style with an easy to mash combo for most enemies. For the bosses, I typically cheesed one combo. There is so much depth and at least four styles for each character that it can be really easy to forget which moves apply to which styles, which is why I opted for the more mashy path. Graphically, the game alternates between looking pretty good to pretty surreal. I found that areas at night tended to have the most favorable impressions for me. Sound design is solid with ambient noise bringing many of the areas of the game to life and combat feeling engaging. As for an entry point, Yakuza 0 doesn't rely on you to know any of the characters from the previous games as it is introducing everyone. There were a couple moments were you could tell the development team was hinting at a character becoming important later on, but it only added to my interest to play subsequent entries. All around, a solid game to play if you are looking for an open world game with a smaller, more tightly designed setting. It was really neat to see a representation of 80's Japan.

Best yakuza yet! A must play!
Quite easily the best title in the franchise so far, Yakuza 0 brings some new dynamics to the forefront as soon as you press start. I find it awesome that you can play as a young Kiyru-Chan and Majima-San, and speaking of young, the game is set in the prosperous 1980's japan with neon lights everywhere. Introduced in this game is a new form of passive skills called the completion point system. The game awards you completion points for doing most anything, from something really simple as walking x amount of kilometers on foot, to more difficult tasks such as winning x amount of money at the casino games. But in the end It's very rewarding to collect these passive skills. (I recommend to get the limit breaker as soon as possible for both characters.) Also it gives you the chance to play some classic Sega arcade titles such as Outrun and Space Harrier (there are two more unlockable games, but i'm not going to ruin the surprise.) Speaking of mini games, there are two whole new mini game that feel like they would have been their own stand alone titles. These are the pocket circuit mini game and the business mini games. The pocket circuit game has it's own leangthy sub store attatched to it, and it's also incredibility in depth. The business mini game is time consuming, but the more fun of the two have to be Majima-San's business. The level up system is done by money. You have to invest money in yourself to level up your skills.A farcry from the previous level up systems. But by the end of the game you can pretty much become a beast, and unlocking the two secret fighting styles with the limit break, you can pretty much become a god. There is another guy who has the same hopes and dreams as you too, they call him mr.shakedown, You can make a fortune off of him, but in the very beginning of the game, it's a great idea to avoid him. The story is as yakuza as it gets. it begins with the three liutenits of the Dojima family conspiring to acquire an empty lot to become the next captain of the family. Kazama-San (formerly Shintaro Fuma, no idea why they changed his name) brought in two very familiar punks into the family, Kazuma Kiryu and Akira Nishkiyama. Kiryu gets into alot of trouble when he goes on a collection in that empty lot, someone murders the guy Kiryu collects from, and it all starts from there. The story actually explains alot about the future events of the series, and they also throw in alot of references to later games in the series, and Sega themselves. Majima on the other hand is trying to get back into the Shimano family, after being expelled and exiled to Sotenbori, Majima's story is the best of the two, i'm not going to get too into it. It's best you play his story and see for yourself, let's just say it gives us more of a glimpse of the personality of the mad dog of Shimano. Majima's play style is also awesme. He has four styles, thug, breaker, slugger, and a secret fourth style that is amazing to use. Majima is defiantly the most fun to play as. Anyone who is a fan of the yakuza franchise, or action adventure rpgs in general should defently give this game a go. As a long time fan of the series, This is by far the best one yet.

An amazing game for first timers
Full disclaimer - I already own this game. This part of the review is for the shipment. I ordered this for a friend of mine because I knew he was in the market for an RPG action game with a lot of story. The shipment was delivered a day ahead of schedule with no issues. Onto the game itself. The game is a wonderful blend of good characters, story, environment, intrigue, and action. Unlike many others, this was my first official foray into the Yakuza series - but what better place to start than at the very beginning? Kiryu and Goro are fascinating characters with believable backstories. You root for them as you beat up the Japanese underworld. You face and understand their pain as their trials and tribulations go awry or not as expected. You want them to succeed. The action itself is wonderful, brutal, and sometimes, comically over-the-top, which I appreciated. The multiple combat styles all felt different, and none of it was repetitive. (I particularly like Kiryu's "beast mode." It is a lot of fun to smash people over the head with items such as motorcycles.) There is a lot more I can put in this review, but to do so would detract from the story of it all. If you are a fan of story-driven RPGs with bursts of violent action, you should get this game.

Perfect in almost every way
This game bleeds style and breathes substance, with the best combat system to date and an ironically fresh take on the two oldest locations in the series. The three styles for each character work well and have a lot of personality, but it takes some doing to really get comfortable and feel like you're getting somewhere with them. The writers did a good job of showing two of the series' mainstay characters in a very different light than what we're used to while still showing shades of the people they become. The story itself is standard, better than 3, worse than 1 and 2, with well done but generic beats you can see coming three chapters away, but the substories more than make up for it. The game runs well on the standard PS4, with hiccups here and there in the adventure mode and some load times, but there's never an interruption in combat where it matters, though I'm a little tired of the irritating double save that has plagued every game in the series. My one gripe is with the localization. It's not "flawed" as such, but Sega needs to make sure that they hire people who can write like they aren't on the internet. The word butthurt didn't exist in any context in 1988, and while I can't speak for everybody it takes me right out of the experience when a hardened gangster uses a phrase thought up by an angry millennial fat chick on livejournal 2.0. If such things don't bother you, it's easily the game of both years it came out, fully worth the price of admission. Addendum- It's even worse than I thought, Majima spends the entire game talking like a 14 year-old on reddit, the localizer should be fired, preferably out of a cannon.

A hidden gem and my game of the year
This is a very story-driver action RPG and I understand that not many people are immediately attracted to game of this genre. After putting in around 30 hours, this game has became one of the best game I’ve ever played. A lot of the moments has made me tear up for the deep story but has also gotten me laugh. The great main story keeps you playing and often times the side story is so distracting but makes everything even better. Often you’ll be surprised by the creativity this game has to offer. The game is weirdly hilarious in many ways and brings very deep and satisfying emotions at the same time. The fighting isn’t too bad but it gets repetitive after a while. I found myself setting to easy mode because I don’t want any delay in continuing the story. The scenery was so real that my mom immediately recognized Osaka when I was there. There are so many things to do in the game like bowling, karaoke, batting, etc. I found myself using the clawing machine for a long period of time just to make a child happy for a side quest. You’ll also get the opportunity to be the president of a real estate agency and a manager of a club. All the side quest are fun and helpful in some way and not a “has no reason to it quest”. There are just so much creativity to the game that by simply wanting to eat takoyaki, it started a side quest with a purple hair old lady that later became a hostess for my club. Weird but makes sense and that’s the charm of this game. Definitely recommend for anyone that enjoys a deep and at times funky story.
