The Power of Myth (25th Anniversary Edition)

Loved this program 25 years ago now I can share it with my grands!

Simply put, this is life-changing material. If you have stumbled upon this and think it might be up your alley, I urge you to watch it. Joseph Campbell has so much inspiring wisdom to impart upon us. His descriptions of the Native American myths, ancient world myths and modern mythology, and the way he draws a line through them all, is unforgettable once heard. You'll never watch a movie or read a novel the same way again. Films by Kubrick will suddenly make perfect sense. The Bible becomes a historical document with hundreds of interesting records and stories to explore. There is spirituality to be found here, but also science and romance. It's a roller-coaster ride of heady, intense information that has to be digested and studied. If that sounds daunting, I meant it as a compliment. You've got to start somewhere, so just dive in, find your bliss, follow your bliss and Welcome aboard the ride of your lifetime!! Your hero's journey awaits you...

This is such a fantastic set of DVDs covering aspects of mythology, religion, and history through millennia of many diverse cultures. Joseph Campbell shows how all of us are connected by our desire to tell stories, and our need to connect to the divine. Bill Moyers asks insightful and penetrating questions, and Campbell's responses definitely make you think. I didn't always agree with what he had to say, but Campbell's mind was a keen one. I first heard of Campbell and The Hero with a Thousand Faces through my enduring love of Star Wars, and I'm so glad that I came across him. Mythology is one of my great interests, and there could be no better guide than Joseph Campbell. The DVDs arrived promptly from the seller, even earlier than anticipated. I would recommend The Power of Myth to anyone!

Of course I rate this high because I saw it on TV and knew what I was ordering. Although Bill Moyers is not the attraction for me; I would say it is difficult to do better than Bill Moyers in getting a quality interview/discussion on a subject one is interested in. I don't like the packaging. It could have been put on fewer disks so that one doesn't have to replace DVDs in their machine as often. I also don't care for cardboard slip covers that go over plastic DVD cases. It's just another thing to deal with and doesn't last as long. In this instance they made the cardboard slip cover look better than the plastic DVD case and the included booklet.

...where is the 12 page viewer guide that is supposed to be included with this anniversary edition? Was it supposed to be in the DVD box? Has anyone else had this problem? For the cost of this DVD, I would like to have all the features as described on the cover.

There are few things which can open doors for you on your life. That is what these interviews did for me.I came home the night these premiered.I had never heard of Joseph Campbell. But I listen to Bill Moyers introduction and I thought.I just might learn something.Apart of Carl Sagan''s Cosmos nothing has so influenced my life.If not for this program. I never would have read Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, the Hindu text, learn about the Buddha, KrishnmurtI and many more.This program may help you become.That wheel rolling out of its own center.

Even Bill Moyers seemed completely baffled at times during these series of interviews with Mr. Campbell, who was a brilliant man. This DVD is not for the weak of mind, nor the weak of heart. Mr. C makes statements ( all of which are validated by recorded history, ancient documents and fossil findings) that can be very frightening on some levels for those who take comfort in their religion. I highly recommend this DVD to anyone who is willing to stretch their brains beyond their own egos. As human beings, we are simultaneously mere grains in the sands of the universe but also gods of the sun and moon. Heavy duty stuff here!

I have had the book Power Of Myth for many years, but this DVD set is a major improvement. Campbell and Moyers do a good job of explaining the various forms of mythology found in Indian tribes, Eastern religions, Jewish and Christian myths and primitive tribes around the world. I recommend this set for believers in religion as well as non-believers. As a believer in science it is difficult for me to accept that there is a god up there in the sky, but I can accept the power of myth.

I don't know how many times I have watched this set since I purchased it but it was literally the best investment I have made. It is packed full of fascinating, extremely relevant information that is timeless and speaks to any generation.HIGHLY recommended

The best edition of theses shows, on DVD. Joseph Campbell had so much to share! This '25th anniversary edition' has english subtitles (at last!) and more than two hours of bonus interviews. It's like meeting a shaman, on a deep, strange, wonderful journey. A great complement, very precious, to his books.

I have watched this DVD a few times since receiving it. Each time I discover something new. It is a wonderful addition to the library. I have lent it out to my clients as well. Everyone gets something from the great works of Joseph Campbell.

This recording and listening to it, is a most wonderful learning exprience. The visdom and insight of Joseph Campbell is a great source of knowledge to be had.

Truly fascinating. Watched it when it was originally on PBS... great to see the series again.
