Q: What size sock for a size 8/9 shoe size

You seem to be between sizes, I’m a 9 and got the xl which are a tight fit. Hope this helps.

May not be much use ..but I'm a size 4 and went for small

I think you could if boots were big enough to allow for the thickness of the socks. Not sure why you would want to. If you were thinking of wearing wet boots over the socks for additional warmth or grip I think you would be better to buy appropriate thickness of wet boots.
