Review and help with issues I see people making with these head units!
I ordered the Pioneer AVH-X390BS Double Din head unit and it will be arriving today, but I wanted to also offer help because I see people having issues with certain things. I will certainly update this review after I install mine, but so far it's 5 stars because it seems to be a nice unit.Issues and solutions:Firmware updates: Use a blank USB key, formatted to FAT32, larger than 2GB but likely best to use one less than 16 GB (thought you can use one that size as well). Unzip the file using your computer and the ONLY file on the USB drive should be the firmware update file. If more than one file, delete the other stuff and leave only the firmware update file. No music or other files should be on the drive at all or it likely will not work. Then update in the menu and it should work. You must be stopped, cannot drive and all phones hooked up via Bluetooth should not be connected.AutoEQ: I see a lot of people saying this makes your head unit sound worse, which is false. The most important function this does is time align your speakers, especially your subwoofer, for your main listening spot. It also sets an EQ which you may or may not like, with the idea flattening the response curve of your speakers. You MUST use the Pioneer mic for this, no other mic will work right because the Pioneer mic is calibrated. I also see a lot of people wrapping the wire around the back of the seat and hanging it where your ears are. While this works, it is not going to optimize as well because the sound is hitting the back of your seat. The right way to do it is to use a mic stand or tripod and put the mic where your ears are, slightly forward from the back of the seat (where your head actually would be). If the mic is flat against the back of your chair (for example, head rest), it will be about 4-8 inches away from where your head (and ears) actually are. You want it exactly where your ears would be, so sit on the passenger side and align it where your head is, level with your ears on the driver side. This will be much more accurate and is the only way to get it to work as intended.Steering wheel controls: No matter what head unit you buy, you need an adapter specific to your vehicle. There is no head unit in this world that is going to "plug and play" with steering wheel controls. You need to wire in the adapter as you install the radio and some you need to set as well. Make sure you set it to 7 for Pioneer (or whatever Pioneer would be) if it does have to be set. Refer to your instructions with the steering wheel adapter. There are millions of combinations of cars, trucks, models, years, makes, etc. This is why they sell aftermarket adapters for your particular vehicle.I hope this helps and here is my review: (Blank until installed)

Pure Pioneer Heaven
This receiver exceeds what I expected. The one thing as a Pioneer so I really shouldn't be surprised. I have 2 Pioneer receivers at home that produce incredible sound. Crisp clear highs and thumping deep bass.Yes this receiver does have an equalizer, it has other functions that allows you to create the perfect song that you want that go beyond the equalizer. As you know it's the speakers that make the receiver. after putting this receiver in my truck I had no idea what my speakers were capable of. I bought a digital Subwoofer to go with this receiver. the bass is so deep in my truck right now I don't even need a subwoofer. I am beyond happy.I love how my phone connects to this thing too. Bluetooth is a beautiful thing and some Bluetooth devices connect quicker and better than others. This receiver is perfect. All of its features and functions and the things that it's capable of doing I got this for a great price on Amazon. Now after all that preys one thing I do want to say is, the dimension of the receiver is a little bit bigger than the original equipment that was in my vehicle. had a hell of a time installing it getting it to fit with all the wiring in the harnesses and all that stuff. Your vehicle obviously may be different but with my experience it was a tight fit. Now that it is installed Lovin life in my truck! I've always been a big fan of pioneer I love the Thumping deep bass Pioneer products produce.

Reliability
This has been a great and reliable headunit for me over the years. I bought it when it was $400 and I’m not sure it would be worth that now but I can’t see the price reviewing this thing. I have pros and cons about this headunitPros:ReliablePlenty of options for customizationThe rainbow light setup was coolButtons on the headunit. You won’t find many of these anymore and I hate the unresponsive touchscreens. Can’t find a headunit with a volume knob on it anymoreGreat sound output compared to an oem headunitInstallation was standardWorks great with amplifierBluetooth compatibilityCons:The screen was responsive to my gestures maybe 60% of the time. You have to press really hard as the screen has like a piece of film that you cannot remove.Brightness: as a biproduct of the film, the screen was fairly not that bright in the daytime because of the glare on the film.DVD player: why in the world would anybody watch a movie on their headunit? It’s 2025. Get a $25 tablet from Walmart, or a dvd drive to plug into your computer or laptop. Seriously it wasn’t a useful feature worth paying for but honestly I paid the extra buck for the dvd player. Not to mention the sound was delayed which made watching anything unbearable. No CarPlay or android autoOverall: if you plan on using this for dvd stuff I’d just say nah find a better one. The Bluetooth and music is all I care about anyway. It did those functions amazing.
