Groz03522 3" Center Square, Finder Capacity

I was a bit hesitant on this purchase since there were quite a few reviews describing poor accuracy. To be fair, all of the Center Squares seemed to have the same issue, so I decided to take a chance on the GROZ. I was not disappointed. The tool is well made and heavier than I expected.I tried it on several pieces of 3/4" dowel and found that if I scribe with a marking knife, as per the instructions (as opposed to a pencil), I can get very good results. The photo included with the review has been enhanced by drawing thin black lines down the center of the grooves. to make it easier to see where the center is when the photo is enlarged.As best I can measure, it is finding center with 0.003" - 0.005", that is certainly within my ability to hold the tool square to the surface repeatedly (and within the tolerance of the dowel being truly round). It is certainly better than my ability to drill. Note, if you use a pencil instead of a scribing knife, or do not hold the tool square and tight against the dowel, you will not get good results.At 3", this is a little larger than I would like for working with smaller dowels, but perfect for working with wooden toy wheels. I may look for a smaller Center Square to work with smaller dowels, but this will definitely keep me going for now.

This is a heavy beast, which is great for keeping it in place or just using it as a weight on shop drawings. Super easy to do center marking, and find corners. Just great all around. Checked against a variety of other high end squares in various directions, this is matched up.

This is a big beast of a center square so if you're expecting the smaller 1-1/2" variety, look for that instead. Longest tip to tip dimension of this one is about 5-3/4". I hesitated a lot in buying one of these on amazon since this is a tool that you want accuracy with and frankly the construction quality from both India and China is all over the board...like playing the lottery...so sight unseen is a gamble at best. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened this. After wiping off the amazing amount of puppy grease and testing it a number of times, I have to say that mine is spot on and it's also very well finished all around. These are made in India and nicely done - they are not stainless, which is my main reason for knocking off one star, but it looks like decent tool steel and the rivets are nearly invisible. I suspect the quality may vary from piece to piece but it's also pretty easy to fudge these in use if you aren't paying attention or don't know that you're supposed to use a very fine point scribe or blade for marking rather than a pencil or marker with a wider tip. Those things or perhaps out of round items may be the sources of a lot of negative reviews, but hey, maybe I just got lucky with mine. I like it enough that I ordered the smaller version from Groz the same evening I received this one and hopefully that one will be as good as this one. Very handy tool to have.EDIT: Received the smaller 1-1/2" version and it has the same accuracy - not as well finished, however, and it took a bit of time to touch up its edges and corners, had a burn mark from hot grinding at the rear of the base. Still recommended.

This thing is s solid piece of steel! I love it.

Saved my bacon on a project that required exacting drilling on the center of a 2" rod. I recommend it as a standard tool in a metal or even wood shop.

Does a good job of finding center on round items. Put item in middle melt a line, turn it 90° and make another line and it's centered.

This is the second (identical) Groz square of this type I have bought. That should give a strong indication of my regard for this tool: more handy than just a center finding device for rounds and can act as a regular (accurate) small square. One is on my bench and the other in my apron.My experience level is as an advanced hobbyist woodworker. In the 70s, I served a 4 year apprenticeship and worked in the trade for a decade or so.

It's a big, substantial piece of metal and reminds me of some sort of Dark-ages weapon. It's center-line is sharply defined, but not sharp, with a beveled edge allowing your marking tool to get right up to the material to be marked. It's about as accurate as I can use.
