Good book
This is a great go to reference when you are trying to plan a project and implement some of the more common steps.

Don't bother with ebook. It's not formatted very well
I bought the ebook edition and promptly returned it. I struggled a couple of hours with the code. Finally gave up. Going to order the hard copy.

It's ok, but you need to have programming experience to fix errors in text/samples
Not for beginners! You need to know how to code to troubleshoot his examples The sample code is poorly vetted and not proofread. Some code is wrong. For example when you create the staff table, it enforces not having any null values in most of the column. You have to go into php admin and change the columns to allow nulls otherwise his insert examples don't work. He frequently misspells items. Be prepared to to have to trouble shoot each exercise. If you are new to programming/sql, this book will be very hard to follow as you will get frequent errors following the examples.

Just ok.
This is just an ok PHP book, it is difficult to read because of a bad layout. Many other books are better for PHP beginners.

Great way to get started with PHP
Some PHP books seem to list PHP terminology and expect the user to be able to use it to create server code. This book presents the most useful PHP in a practical and digestible style.Really recommend this as a first PHP book.

Not very detailed book - only the basics
The book correctly written. However, not very detailed. Unfortunately, it is only the basics. There are more detailed courses on youtube. For a job interview it will not be useful. Nevertheless, thank you for the good price.

Excellent set of tutorials.
Gibbs style is pedagogical, and very effective. The set of tutorials covers most or many topics related to web application development in a logical straightforward style. I have taken off one star because of printing deficiencies (not the author's fault), and for the repetition of content in some places. Nevertheless, I would still recommend this set of tutorials for a nice quick initiation to the tools.

An Uncomplicated Introduction To PHP
I had been looking for a simple introduction to PHP and stumbled upon this little book. Having been put off by the high prices, bewildering technospeak and monolithic sizes of some of the offerings from other authors it was refreshing to find this no-frills budget-priced book which took a structured approach to the subject without either making unreasonable assumptions about my knowledge, or conversely patronising me.I found its folksy approach easy to read and understand, and the content was logically structured to encourage me to improve. The author provided useful examples and a codebase on the accompanying website. I wasn't surprised to learn that the author had had teaching experience. It felt like a series of lessons that could be tackled at the readers' own pace.At 250-odd pages it was still powerful enough to take me well beyond basic concepts such as form building and database handling into areas that hobbyist programmers such as myself could find genuinely useful such as Ajax, JQuery and even the creation of WordPress plugins, something I wouldn't have expected from a book at this modest price.Don't expect fancy typesetting, distracting cartoons or high-falutin wordplay - this book is about delivering the essentials, and in my opinion it succeeds in that.
