Charming Stories with Lovable Characters
Again I bought a book not knowing anything about it. I have read a number of books that I wouldn't have bought if I read the description instead of going by a high percentage of five star reviews. I haven't been disappointed very often. This is a collection of delightful stories mostly centering around characters who are from the Spokane Indian Tribe. Thoughtful, intelligent, loving, sensitive stories that kept me interested with most of them tugging at my heart strings.I will certainly read more of Mr. Alexie's writing.

A Variety and Rarity Native American Stories
Quite a variety of stories. Some that really made you think. However all in all, I could only give it three points

I love this book
I love this book. I love how Alexie talks about poverty, sexism and racism in an upfront and honest way without the stories being completely tragic. Sometimes I feel like we only talk about discrimination as a result of something huge or some major catastrophe (don't get me wrong, those need to be talked about too, but I think it makes discrimination seem like something that isn't always happening in tiny ways every day... at least for white people: that is the definition of white privilege) but we rarely ever have stories that are about the lives of normal people experiencing normal discrimination in their mostly ordinary lives. Most of the narrators are funny and most of them are insightful. I would recommend this book to everyone.

Four stars
I confess I don't like short stories very much. I prefer long novels I can get lost in for days or weeks. Sherman Alexie is one exception. His short stories are so insightful, funny, or sad, that they contain worlds. This collection is no exception. From the political lawyer who yearns for his glory days as a basketball player to the broke, homeless wanderer who sees his grandmother's dance regalia in a pawnshop, these stories take you far away into a world you can get lost in.

Funny and well written
I actually had to buy this book for a gender studies study class, we didn't have to read all the stories, but they were so enjoyable that I ended up reading them all anyway. The first thing that comes to mind about the book is that it is funny. But really, it's more than just funny, this book forces you to examine stereotypes of Native Americans, they're not all the sexualized John Redcorn or Pocahontas or the gambling alcoholics or the spiritual in-tune with nature people we'd like to categorize them as, although some might fit into these categories. The stories are remarkably real, and make you feel like you are there experienceing the pain, the sadness, and the laughs. Within each short story, Alexie manages to build both characters and plots that are highly convincing and ordinary, despite the remarkable nature of them. I highly reccomend this book.

Characters to remember.
The characters that stay with and change my perspective are what I most appreciate. I will always remember Corliss and Frank Snake Church, as well as the hopeless alcoholic seeking his Grandmother's regalia. I'm also going to stop mentioning my Native heritage (paternal Grandmother 1/2 Cherokee), which gives me about a spoonful of Indian in a 5 gallon bucket of white.

Molto bello

I loved these stories
I loved these stories. Each of the characters was so different but they felt like they belonged together. Such great writing.

Ten little indians
So well written , full of humour, subtle criticism of the underlying racism of white America and of native Americans' passivity.
