Really happy with my purchase.
This is a great tool that will last forever if you take the time to do as another reviewer suggested for the Estwing Sportsman’s Axe and sand off the varnish on the handle. It’s a clear shellac that will inevitably crack and the first thing you need to do after removing all the stickers is to get the factory varnish off. I’m so glad to have found the description for how to do this that I decided to write a review for the rock hammer in order to share it: First you want to tape off the metal part of the handle and use 100 grit sand paper to completely sand off the varnish on the grip (it will become lighter in color as you sand). Then rub neatsfoot oil on the leather multiple times daily until it stops soaking in. (It takes about 3-4 days and several coats of oil.) For a more detailed description of the process look for A. Swenson’s review for the 14” Sportsman Axe called “This is the real deal!” (Definitely worth reading, it’s a much better explanation of the process than what I’ve provided here.) Admittedly this is a bit of extra work for something you just purchased but if you’re like me and frequently customizing your tools, it’s actually pretty enjoyable. Lighter fluid works well for removing stubborn adhesive left over from the stickers and I used steel wool to polish out any scratches. I purchased this rock hammer after buying the axe and both have held up great with the sanding & oil process! I don’t expect to need another one in my lifetime, and I really enjoy the look and feel of this model compared to others out there.

You won't Regret the Purchase
This is a great and tough hammer. It feels good in the hand, very comfortable, nice grip, great balance. It's a great size for larger rocks, and where a bit more weight and force is required. One end is pointed for prying, the other end is either serrated or "cross hatched" depending on what you order. The metal is hard, resist deformation, keeps it's shape. The hammer has a very nice and attractive finish. The hammer does cost a little more, but provides much more value than the light weight Chinese made hammers with the tube handle that always seems to bend and where the rubber handle causes blisters and will come loose when using it. So the value is definitely there.

Must Have Tool for Rock Hounding
This tool is just the right weight for men or women, it is sharp and well made. We took ours all over Southern Nevada and used it in a variety of conditions and hardness of rocks, still looks like new. Buy the cover/belt hanger even if you do not plan to hang it from a belt to protect the tool and your car/transport container.

Great Rock Pick - Made in USA
Great for entry or experienced rock-hounds! The 22 oz is preferred over the lighter rock pick, unless it's very soft rock. Leather handle adds long lasting style and comfort.

An heirloom in the making
As a geophysics student, when I finally got around to buying a rock hammer, I followed the "buy once, cry once" philosophy and decided to buy the model of hammer NASA sent to the moon. I could have spent a third as much money and gotten a cheap hammer from some no-name importer, but buying an Estwing supports American industry and guarantees the standard of quality that has made Estwing a household name (the warranty is nice too). This hammer is solid - nothing like the one-and-done, low-quality tools so many people have come to expect. Made from a one-piece tool steel forging with a stacked leather handle and riveted-on grip cap, it's as durable as a hammer is going to get. Plus, the leather handle gives it a certain level of throwback classiness. I have little doubt this hammer will outlast me unless I leave it on an outcrop somewhere.

Love it
Great product in the field. Leather bound handle is very comfortable. Balanced well and sturdy. Heavy duty but not overweighted.

Very well made and balanced. Don't forget to pair it with the Estwing leather sheath. Disclaimer states it's for wooden posts but I have had no issues with use for geology and it's forged steel so up for the task.

Ottimo prodotto. Lo uso da diversi anni ed è ancora in ottimo stato, pure l'impugnatura in pelle che temevo essere un po'delicata regge bene.
