Ann Devine, Ready for Her Close-Up

Funny but serious - captures rural life very well
I really enjoyed this book. The central character is very well written and I enjoyed in particular reading about her work as a carer for old people, her problems with her manager, and her own lack of confidence and how she overcomes that. I thought that this novel was a good snapshot of contemporary rural Ireland. It was written with a light, comic touch but was none the less serious for that. It captured well, in a way that few books about rural Ireland do, the humour and irreverence of people going about their daily lives and trying to cope with loneliness, ageing and the empty nest syndrome. It also describes well the dynamics of how communities survive and adapt really well, how people mobilise to get things done and the tensions that arise. I look forward to Colm O'Regan's next novel.

The divine Mrs Devine
For a little while at the beginning I didn't think I was going to like this book. But I am glad I persisted. It was funny, enjoyable and in Ann he has created a character I'd be happy to follow the adventures of.
