Simply Said: Communicating Better at Work and Beyond: 9781119285281: Business Communication Books @ desertcart.com Review: Great book! - Great communication book! If you want to better your communication skills this is definitely the book you are looking for. 100% recommended! Review: Transformative - I was recently asked to chair a large committee meeting, consisting of approximately 30 respected peers held over 2 days, and the outcome of the meeting would have implications for millions of dollars of resource allocation. Clearly a daunting task, and one that I wanted to fulfill to the best of my abilities. I've long recognized that I have multiple limitations in my presentation skills (too many "uhs", rambling, speaking too quickly). I downloaded samples of about ten books, including this one. Ultimately, I selected it because it presented a wholistic perspective, one which emphasized the audience perspective (how can I help them), and wove it consistently through multiple different presentation scenarios--public speaking, chairing a meeting, one-on-one meetings. The advice is very pragmatic, the book highlights key passages/sections (thus allowing for speed-reading), and its emphasis on helping others aligns with my own personal goals (acknowledging that I am at best intermittent in achieving them). The desertcart Kindle ability to highlight text and then later access it from your personal desertcart page is also a very valuable resource so that you can return to the key text easily, wherever you are (search in Google for "your highlights kindle" for instructions). So how did the meeting go, you may be wondering? Overall, while I made some mistakes, I think I did much better than I have done in the past, and credit this book with part of that success. In conclusion, this was a transformative book that is well worth the effort and stands out from other books on public speaking.

Transformative

Make it about the audience.
You’ll learn whatever the communication medium or purpose, make it about the audience, not you. This book will take you through various communication mediums and coach you on the best approach, ne that is human and not self-centered.

Simple yet profound...
In keeping with its title, Simply Said offers a host of practical measures for improving one's communication. But the greatest gift that Jay Sullivan gives to the reader is a challenge that often times is none too simple - to reset the compass needle of your communications such that it directs you through others' doorways. Brevity does breed clarity, but nothing fosters understanding and engagement more than tuning your messages to the frequency of those receiving them.

Excellent Theory and Practical Guidance
This book is excellent. So many books provide great theory or perspective, but little practical guidance to put it to action. Others provide "what you should do" without the "why you should do it.". This books strikes a remarkable balance of both on nearly every page. You'll take away what to do, how to do it, and why. It's communicated concisely, clearly, and cohesively - exactly as you'd expect from such a title. I'm thoroughly impressed.

Useful tips, needs good editing
The book has a lot of content. From presentations skills, to how to communicate to our customers, to how to delegate to other. It gives good high-level overview of each element of business communication. It gives a good overview of each facet of communication and provides practical tips. The layout is useful and some of the examples provided support the presented suggestions. The book needs a good editing. 1) Less is more. Because the book touches on some many different forms of communication, it doesn't really gets deep into each form. Which is a shame. If some sections where left out, other sections could be explored more deeper. 2) In ever chapter, it's been mentioned that the author works for a training company. This is becoming annoying as it feels you're reading a brochure. It diminishes the book. 3) Some paragraphs are repeated as highlight sections. Word for word. Which means some text is listed double.

I Wish They Taught This In School
This book made me realize how much I could improve my communications style. It is easy to assume we know how to effectively communicate with others but like everything else it is a skill. Simply Said takes you through a number of real world scenarios and shows how subtle shifts in mentality can enable you to more effectively, persuade, sell and lead the people around you. In addition to a valuable framework for thinking about how to communicate, Simply Said also provides tactics and mantras that helped me immediately in my day to day life. For example, the tactic of starting every client interaction with a question about what they think the meeting is for has provided surprising insights into both my clients agendas and opportunities for better client service (and more business) that I would have otherwise overlooked. I wish I'd read this book earlier in my career but late is better than never. As such, I think it would be an invaluable gift for any young professional or college student.
