Q: What is the length and particularly the width of the top of the bracket which screws into the furniture?

5 inches for each extension that projects from the corner of the bracket.

Q: Mat finish or polished gold?

Don't order this product. Finish is awful and sender would not accept return without a heavy penalty. I will now try to spray paint mine and hope it works.

Q: Maximum weight? I have a media console 72” x 18" D weighs 244lbs. Will the legs support the weight?

The legs are sturdy, and can probably support the weight. In my original review, I had commented that the screws supplied with the legs were too small and they went right through the holes; I used my own screws.

Q: Can this be use with particleboard ?

Probably, but it would not be ideal. If you do it, I would pre-drill the holes with a drill bit smaller than the screws you are going to use. Particularly board is always problematic in my opinion.
