I have had mine plugged in for about an hour and it's really hot on the bottom. Is that normal?

It is normal if you are pushing a large electrical load through it. You should know the amp draw of your devices and ensure that they are within the rated specs. I believe this device is rated for a maximum of a 10amp load. A normal household circuit breaker will trip at 15amps.
