Too much style, not enough substance
I was a little disappointed in this book. I would not suggest it for beginners in jewellery but all equipment you would need on your bench to start making jewellery was listed and a lot of it was not used in the book. Beginners would have most of this equipment so all that was required was additional equipment. It references 'gypsy-setting' tools which you can make out of masonry nails apparently but no picture of these and they are used in the book (youtube was a big help)There was quite useful information on the various stones (not a comprehensive list though).I'm a visual learner and the various stone setting techniques were accompanied by illustrations, not photographs, and there weren't enough of them. For example, I read the section on 'gypsy' or 'rubover' settings but I didn't understand it until I'd watched a very detailed video on youtube (I'm not a jewellery beginner, by the way, but stone setting is my weak area so I thought a specialist book would help). The technique is described but there is no photograph of a finished article in the example which I always find helpful. There were plenty of photographs from other jewellers but1) I wouldn't want to copy their work2) They were far beyond what I would attempt3) there were too many.Overall this could have been an instruction booklet, not a book - far too much 'padding' in my opinion. It seemed cobbled together using chapters from a beginners book, information on stones and some instructions on setting and then loads of glossy photographs from designersI've given it two stars for the information that was given but I wouldn't recommend it

Makes a nice read. Not for beginners I think.
The book is very informative, maybe not for beginner as it's not always step by step.Alot of pages talks about differant stones that I already was aware of.If your looking for specific areas of jewelry making suggest looking further but nice book.

Highly recommended
This book is essential for every jeweller's library. The techniques are well explained, everything is covered in depth and the photos are very useful. Delighted with my purchase, this is a title that's in my hands every other day.

Hoping for more inspiration
Good starting point to a variety of different settings, was hoping for a bit more detailed instruction/guidance. Also thought that the book would be a little more inspirational, mainly cause the cover is so nice.If you're looking for a guide to a number of different settings then it's still the book for you.
