The Last Kingdom: The Complete Series [DVD]

Yes, there WERE Black priests in Anglo-Saxon England
I recently purchased The Last Kingdom series and, although I realize the history's timeframe is often changed and certain characters fabricated or altered, I love the period-piece drama as entertainment.I would like to address a bit of misinformation presented by a previous poster who claimed:"As with so many successful series, pressure for woke, 'progressive' elements and casting prevailed in the last season. We are to believe sub-saharan Africans abounded in medieval England. It is so tiresome, so dishonest, and makes me want to give up."The truth is, there WERE Sub-Saharan Africans in Anglo-Saxon "England" as far back as the Viking Age. According to the article, "The Earliest Evidence for Africans in Britain," from a webpage devoted to archaeological digs/findings,"Based on the examination of skeletal remains, there are at least three female burials from Viking Age Britain which osteologists have so far suggested have African ancestry. One of the burials was a 1,000 year old female skeleton found in the River Coln at Fairford, Gloucestershire. She has been described as a woman aged 18-24, from Sub-Saharan Africa, with radiocarbon dating suggesting that she probably died between AD 896-1025...There are multiple historical sources, including the writings of Andalusi chroniclers, as well as the famous Fragmentary Annals of Ireland, in which the Vikings are said to have raided the north coast of Africa and Mauritania and brought captives (including royals) back to Ireland where remained ‘for a long time’. With that in mind, it’s possible that Viking slavery brought North African people to Britain too."Yes, many black people were in England at the times depicted in the Last Kingdom, so people most likely would not have thought it 'totally strange". There were also Black priests (though not one known as "Father Benedict" as in the TV series herein discussed): Hadrian. Of him, it is written:"The great chronicler Bede (Historia Ecclesiastica, IV.1) writes about a ‘man of African race’ called Hadrian who arrived in AD 668. He became an incredibly influential abbott, and was pivotal in shaping England’s church structures, and may have even introduced the study of Greek to the Anglo-Saxons."So, no: "Father Benedict" was not added due to "pressure for woke, 'progressive' elements and casting." There actually WERE black people from various parts of Africa --Northern AND Sub-Saharan, in the pre-England Anglo-Saxon kingdoms.Hope that sets the record -- and the REAL history -- straight."The Last Kingdom" is a very entertaining period-piece that DOES follow some accurate history (the story of Æthelflæd as the Warrior Lady -- and eventually, Warrior Queen of the Mercians, for instance), but it is primarily entertainment. And if approached as such, it is a great series, with wonderful characters. I especially love Uhtred's "Band of Brothers" -- Finan, the hard-drinking and ever-loyal Irishman, Sihtric Kjartansson (bastard son of the Dane, Kjartan, the man responsible for Uhtred's Dane-father, Ragnar the Great's death) and "Baby Monk" Osferth (King Alfred's bastard son, who grew up in a monastery in Winchester). Their relationship is heartwarming and inspiring -- and also quite humorous, at times, like when the band is trapped by villagers in an alehouse in a Dane-controlled village in Mercia and can't get out; so Uhtred decides to climb up on the roof and use torches from the alehouse to burn the neighboring homes and businesses. He keeps asking Finan for more torches and Finan remarks to Osferth, "He just likes to burn things!" And Osferth innocently replies, "He'd love Hell."This has become one of my favorite series, not for its historical accuracy, but for its stories and its wonderful characters.Oh, and interesting aside: Bernard Cornwell and I share the same direct ancestor in the real Uhtred of Bebbanburg -- who wasn't "Uhtred son of Uhtred son of another Uhtred," by the way. He was Uhtred son of Waltheof Ealderman of Bamburgh, son of Ealdred grandson of Oswulf (High-reeve of Bamburgh and Ealdorman of York), son of Eadwulf I, King of the Northern English who died in 913.I taught history for many years and am still quite fascinated by ancient history -- especially the history of the British isles, where much of my ancestry is rooted. If you haven't seen The Last Kingdom yet and are wondering if you should purchase this video series: Give it a watch first and you just might do as I have, and buy the DVDs to add to your video library.

Outstanding series....Not so good packaging.
Absolutely loved this series on Netflix. I found this on sale during Prime Days for a great price. Definitely an awesome deal. I will enjoy watching no doubt. The packaging is another story, however. I found a few disks with fingerprint smudges all over them, seasons 4 & 5 were mixed together, and the case surfaces, including the disk holder had a greasy/oily coating on them giving it a dirty appearance. I almost returned the series until i found all the series disks and put them in the correct order. The case had a factory sealed plastic wrap upon arrival so there wasn't any reason to suspect tampering. All is good now, I cancelled the return and look forward to watching this awesome series.

great show / horrible packaging
I would give the show 5 stars; but deducted one for packaging. Several discs were loose despite the others being nearly impossible to release from the center clip. The loose discs were dirty and needed to be cleaned before they would play. I stored the discs in individual sleeves I had on hand. The program content is excellent.

Useless to Play on a UK DVD player
I am incredibly disappointed by this complete set of DVDs of The Last Kingdom as when we came to play them on our DVD player they are incompatible for the player as they are for American and Canadian DVD players. Unfortunately these were a Christmas present for my husband and we only opened and tried them today.

Amazing show!
I don't watch a lot of TV, but 'The Last Kingdom' hooked me in, and it's now one of my all-time favourites. It's a riveting, action-packed historical drama, and wonderfully acted with amazingly written characters. I watched it on Netflix but loved it so much that I decided to buy it. I haven't played the discs yet, to test for quality, but I'm really happy with my purchase. The packaging looks great!
