Great Wheels--Great Price
A great set of wheels. Tires fit very tightly to the rim, somewhat difficult to mount and set the bead (inflate them by steps, e.g., 30psi--knead the tire, then 50psi ditto, then full), but they stay seated when I deflate the tire to squeeze in some tubular sealant. Tire bead seating makes a disconcerting pop, but it's probably harmless. They flex a bit under heavy acceleration, but it could be my fork, as the front tire rubs the front brake arm a bit (there is very little clearance for the 26mm tires I am using). The rear might rub the brake pad sometimes, but it could just be the carbon amplifying the sound of my tires shredding pavement when I crush the pedals. True and round within 1mm out of the box, and still true after about 500 miles. The ride quality is very smooth, they roll superbly, and I find myself coasting past fellow riders on downhills often. The aerodynamic benefits become very obvious at 24-25mph and up. Not too badly affected by crosswinds. Didn't weigh them out of the box, but my bike is about a pound lighter than with the old wheels. Braking is adequate. The supplied brake pads looked like regular metal rim pads, so I bought Campagnolo carbon pads and they work fine. Still getting used to the gritty sound they make, and they seem to be wearing quickly, but that's another review. Rim surfaces very warm, but touchable after hard braking efforts. There was nothing by way of a manual in the box, but that info is available at the Dynatec website. Very low maintenance. I put a bit of split drinking straw over my valve stems as they rattled a wee bit. A soft cloth with a bit of spray furniture polish really makes the matte UD finish glow. Needless to say, the old wheels (very fine Archetypes on White Ind. hubs) are gathering dust. For 1/4 or 1/5 the cost of Zipp or ENVE, etc., I can't imagine that those brands are four or five times better. (Marginal gains, perhaps.)Highly recommend.LONG TERM UPDATE: The front wheel bearings are shot after about 9 months; perhaps the hub/axle/bearing interface is poorly engineered. I replaced them once, and the new ones (Enduro) were ticking and grinding within about 6 months. Rear wheel is still fine, but I detect some side play when I wiggle it by hand. Not noticeable when riding, but there aren't many hills or curves in south FL. I upgraded to Reynolds AR41 (pretty good) and these are now my spares.
