Chaosium Inc. Call of Cthulhu Starter Set

First off I have to say that EVERYTHING in this set is super high quality for a starter set, right down to it coming with premade characters. The booklets are of a higher standard than I expected, the box is wonderfully solid, the art on everything is beautiful, and the dice are solid. Nothing in this set is done without a purpose, including the off colour d10 which is off colour so that you can roll with advantage or disadvantage. I've been playing D&D for years so getting into Call of Cthulhu was much easier for me, but I could hand this to someone who'd never played Tabletop RPG's and they could get the hang of it.a few criticisms; The language used in this is a bit advanced, but I suppose that is to be expected with eldritch horror. The handouts and character sheets are clingy and difficult to pull away from one another. The layout of the adventures are a bit difficult for a new Story Keeper if they've never been a game master before (advising roleplay with sometimes little to no direction) though at times the opposite is true, wherein it holds the hand of new game masters really well. Finally the biggest issue is the difficulty curve it has for understanding the mechanics in general (to an extent), the books often do a poor job of explaining how certain actions are meant to play out, Primarily combat.regardless of these nitpicks this is an INCREDIBLY worthwhile purchase for anyone interested in Call of Cthulhu, ESPECIALLY if they aren't sure they'll like the game enough to warrant the slightly high cost of the main rulebook and player's handbook for 7th Edition.

For the price it’s great. The content (the writing) is excellent. Well done. Many other RPG games would do well to take note of this introductory pack and method. Happy I purchased it.Questions I had before buying: book two is the rule book. It’s not identical to the free QuickStart pdf. Sure it has a lot of the same rules etc., but it’s NOT simply a print copy of that pdf. You will still want to download the free PDF. (It’s free. Why not?)I don’t believe the adventures in this introductory box are printed anywhere else. So, again it’s not the free PDF adventure.Surprisingly happy to discover that my enclosed dice were green, with a blue % die. (Unlike others who said they were gray.)Bad: I found the paper to be very delicate and thin. Felt like anything other than an extremely cautious handling might crimp, crumple, tear the pamphlets. I’m generally gentle with my books to begin with, but this feels like the kind of material that would slip inside a folder binder and rip free.I’m not saying it’s cheap, just delicate. I’m saying, you’ll want the full rules in hardcover to travel to game night.Super excited. Now I just need another player or two.

If you are even remotely interested in RPGs and/or the Cthulhu mythology and setting, consider picking this up. It comes with everything you need to not only play the game, but LEARN it in an interactive way. One of the three books is dedicated to teaching you how to play the game by actually having you play a really fun (and pretty long!) solo adventure. It works kind of like a Choose Your Own Adventure book, but teaches you how the character sheet and stats work, and how to use them to play the game, as well as introduces you to the setting and has a fun story!After that, there is a set of the basic rules for the game, and three MORE adventures to play with a group of your friends. It includes dice, maps, player handouts and aids too.A great way to start playing a great RPG!

Buy this directly off of the Chaosium website instead of amazon. They have all their products available as hard copies and you get a free PDF version to read while you wait! I ordered the starter set and amazon didn't pack the box well, but Chaosium always double boxes and takes care of their books during the shipping process.This is a starter set. It's cheap enough to get you interested and provides enough of the basic rules to make you want to learn more.If you're buying a starter set and expecting cool unique dice... just don't. You want cool dice go buy some from your local game store. This is a great teaser for the RPG if you want to test out to see if you'd like it. I personally wasn't the biggest fan of the modules included. I enjoyed my screen keeper set much more than this one, but it definitely got me hooked!

The game is great, but instead of putting this in a box to ship, it was put in an envelope, which got wet on the porch, and the packaging was crushed as a result of the lack of care for packaging. Thankfully the game was still sealed in the plastic shrink wrap, so the contents are ok.

I loved that it has a solo adventure for new DMs/ Keepers to learn the different facets of the game. The solo adventure is a lot of fun too. It’s a great way to get into table top gaming.The other two included adventures were great too!The booklets themselves are good not great, but for the cost I wasn’t expecting much tbh.The pre made characters were nice to learn the game basic with.The box itself was a bit warped when I got it, but that kind of stuff doesn’t bother me too much. I think they shipped it straight from the manufacturer and the box must’ve gotten pushed in during shipping. Other than that it’s great!

This is a great place to start off from, the set has a beautiful intro for the keeper( or dm) that shows them exactly how to make a character step by step , I never felt confused when playing the solo part, then the first adventure was a little simple but as a first game pretty good, the only thing I had issue with when running it was just me being a bit confused by combat ( but that was probably just me ) and only one other nit pick was how( spoilers!!) if you kill the first Monster outside , others ones just come and take the investigators if they don’t run, like no saves or anything but you can ofc change this , overall very good! Definitely want to run more in this system !

The story playthrough is very smooth. The book talks about percentile dice where one has 00, but none do. That was wierd. Otherwise Lowecraftian TTRPG

Contains everything needed not just to play but the three books are brilliantly laid out to teach the system,playing solo first, running one on one and then for a group. Layout is clear and easy to follow with beautiful art and design. A fantastic starter set
