Reading Detective® Beginning

If you are looking for something to increase reading comprehension, look no further. It teaches students to analyze text and to use critical thinking. I am a tutor and I use Reading Detective for two of my students, one in elementary and one in high school. Highly recommended.

I love the Reading Detective Series. Each of my sons has used the various grades offered by this company and have thrived. This book is meant for 3-4 graders. I understand your child my be in these grades but have a lower or higher reading level. I can't give you the exact book to start with, but as a homeschool mom, I can tell you they are very accurately marked with the grade. Basically there is a reading passage of several paragraphs-a short story or exerpt from a book. The student is then to answer 8-10 multiple choice and direct questions about the story. The questions are thorough-some obvious, some require the child to look for specific sentences to back up their answer. All in all, the child learns to find the theme, supporting evidence, and learn to comprehend what they are reading more effectively. I highly recommend this book as a supplement to your language arts and daily reading. We saw improvement in comprehension and I believe you will as well.

I give the product 4 stars. It's simple and efficient. I want to mention that it was listed as "like new" by HPB but was actually missing the pretests pages and a few pages were completed. I don't have time to return and buy another one so I will find a way to get the pretests and then work around the done lessons.

I was very impressed with this item. It is the best common core competency based reading comprehension book I have seen to date. It not only has grade 3-4 level passages but also detailed information and tips on how one Learns the comprehension skills such as target words, how to differentiate main idea from details, etc. I am about to order the other levels in the reading series for my tutoring practice.

I'm using this book for my 4th grader. Although he reads well, he needs practice drawing conclusions from what he reads. This book builds reasoning skill. Not only does the reader answer questions about what he/she read, but he/she tells what sentence or paragraph supports his/her conclusion. I recommend it.
