Q: Is it ok to grease the plate that slides

That would be like greasing your brake rotors on your car (don't ever do that). It ruins the brake pads. The metal bar is like your rotor, and the plates that squeeze are like brake pads. If you take away the friction, it can't stop any sway. You should be loosening the sway brake when you are off the freeway, since it isn't made for maneuvering, it's made to prevent maneuvering. I don't loosen mine, unless the noise is going to bother other people.

Q: do you need 2..R and L ?

That depends on the length and weight of your trailer and your weight distribution system. I use 2 (R and L) with my Eaz Lift, but my travel trailer is a 30 foot long toy hauler weighing 9000 lbs. In general you want 2 bars for travel trailers weighing more than 6000 to 7000 lbs. However, make sure your weight distribution is adjusted properly before deciding on adding a second friction bar. An improperly adjusted system will still have sway even after adding the bar.

Q: What are the dimensions of the mounting plate? I am trying to mount to a 3" frame

The plate measures 4.5 in. wide x 7.5 in long. The EAZ lift part number for the plate only is 48388 for your reference. Good luck.
