Paul Nicklen, wildlife photojournalist, showcases his stunning photography for National Geographic with this collection of North American bears: the grizzly, polar bear, black bear and the rarest spirit bear. Evocative storytelling combines with Nicklen's landmark photographs to reveal the truths and myths about these amazing creatures, and sheds light on their threatened ecosystems. Years of photographing bears in their habitat have given Nicklen a special understanding of these majestic mammals: the polar bear, ranked most popular species on Earth; the grizzly, feared and misunderstood; and the black bear, as well as its precious white counterpart, the spirit bear. Nicklen believes that sharing knowledge and stories about bears will impact the way we think of them, and thus ensure their future. Well-known environmentalists such as Wade Davis, Sylvia Earle, Werner Herzog, and Nicklen himself contribute essays to enhance the message of Nicklen's photographs. Quotes from literary figures punctuate the pages, offering insight into the magnificence of these impressive mammals. An epilogue takes a global look at the future of bears. Beautiful Bear Book
My wife loves her bear book. She has always loved bears and we have a lot of "stuff" of bears and about bears but this book puts the bear in the environment it belongs with its beautiful pictures and well written narrative.

Stark gebraucht statt neuwertig
<Angestossen, Einband eingerissen, angestoßen....wenn ich Zeit gehabt hätte, wäre es zurückgegangen...nicht schön. Man sollte immer klare Ansagen machen, sonst fühlt man sich nicht gut behandelt.

An exquisite and poignant record
As I have become accustomed to with National Geographic publications, the quality and standard is superlative and difficult to surpass in, both, visual design and written content. This is a book that painstakingly highlights the plight of bears in different regions of the world and loss of their associated and endangered habitat. While it, rightly, highlights these concerns, it remains 'upbeat' in its approach with a positive outlook toward various conservation projects and to ensure measures are implemented to protect these increasingly endangered species. This tome, undoubtedly, does justice to bears [creatures I, personally, have a particular affection for] inasmuch by, rightly, dispensing with myths and by revealing rarely seen behaviours, thereby, increasing empathy for these misunderstood but nevertheless significant and important predators. The poignant passion and concern is conveyed with eloquently written insights and the numerous dangers confronting these majestic creatures, in whichever region they inhabit. Although it most certainly does not detract from the overall content, the only [nit-picking] observation I have made is that some of the print seems to have published in a 'silvery grey' tone on white pages which may make it difficult for some readers and in a certain light [or perhaps lack of it]. Otherwise I can do nothing but highly recommend this wonderful, magnificent and awe-inspiring account of bears, in their natural habitats, the photographs are stunning.
