Q: what is a wooden knife used for?

You name it, a wooden knife can do it! Fold sheets, negotiate a contract to buy a major oil company, hit the center hole on Skee-Ball, clean a swimming pool, it can do virtually anything!

Q: How is it's edge retention?

There is no edge. Though I suppose you could put one on it if you wished? I don't know the wood type, but it is not particularly hard either. So an edge would not hold or cut much

Q: How exactly is it held together? Do you need to pound the pins?

The pins fit very snug into the holes drilled for them. This alone holds the knife together. Pounding the pins is not necessary or advised, as the holes are very exact, so if you get stuck, the holes might not be lined up correctly, and this could damage the knife. Merely applying pressure should be fine if you find yourself at the very end of the pin.
