desertcart.com: The Rocketeer At War: 9781631405846: Guggenheim, Marc, Bullock, Dave, Bone, J.: Books Review: Very satisfied - Book was in great shape on arrival. Affordable and fast shipping. Thanks!! Review: Good cartoony fun - Nicely paced and dynamically drawn. But no real attempt at capturing the appearance of Cliff or Betty -- one will always miss the precise art and rich period atmosphere of Dave Stevens. Nevertheless, a fun read.

This book was so much fun. The danger at the end might seem a little old hat (the same trope being used in several other fictions) but the historical notes were fun. The team was also able to introduce other costumed characters in a fun, organic way that blends seamlessly with Stevens originals!

Very run of the mill
The story is a very straightforward story with not a lot of character development. What makes it hard to get through was the artwork. Dave Stevens would be embarrassed if he saw what they did to his characters. The best thing about this graphic novel is the Rocketeer novella.

The Rocketeer is a character I particularly like, but that I feel has been mishandled here. It's not awful, just unimpressive. There were several ideas and elements I enjoyed: the potential for a love triangle between Cliff, Betty and a sexy Irish RAF pilot, evil Nazi pilots lifted from adventure flyboy comics of old and having the Rocketeer as a two-fisted, Kraut-smashing hero. However, the drawing of the first half (by Dave Bullock) is terribly subpar, delivering very poor expressions and action. It picks up later on when J. Bone takes on the second half, so there's that. What I really, really disliked was how Cliff is characterized as a quipping Spiderman wannabe, instead of the dashing but self-conscious guy I know and love. With this flat, unengaging characterization, the action loses all of the edge it could've had, even if it has plenty of jetpacks and guns. I hope IDW makes better Rocketeer in the future, like they have in the past. This one, on the other hand, just for completionists.
