The illustrations are excellent and the detailed analyses well written and not overlong. An absolute treasure trove, although certainly not for light reading. Sufficiently Detailed and Comprehensive
As student in sixth form/ college finding a book related to engineering is often a struggle because you either get textbooks aimed at an audience of people already in the field or you get an overly simplistic children's book. This book was neither of those - It broke up the engine designs elegantly using well annotated illustrations. The information was well communicated and easy enough to follow without leaving out too much technical detail. I loved how the author also adds in bits of humour to help retain your attention as well as enjoy the book. The historical side of the book is not overpowering and allows you to appreciate the evolution of engines and how we use them along with a lovely display of some very sexy cars. Honestly well done!

Great book, sabotaged by designer
This is a 5-star book spoiled by 2-star design. The words are knowledgeable, clear and humorous, the photos superbly sharp and detailed, but… every single page is printed with words and pictures on a black background. Professional book designers know, and regular research confirms, that white-out-of-black (WOB) text is measurably harder to read and reduces comprehension. Amateurs probably think it’s ‘sophisticated’. Add very small caption type and high-gloss paper, and the result is an unpleasant and tiring reading experience at odds with the fascinating content. Editor, publisher and Mr Gray himself should have known better.

A very nice book with high print quality. The data, images, and information are all well-presented.

Si tienes a alguien interesado en motores o un futuro ingeniero mecánico, regálale este libro o si tú eres el susodicho, cómpratelo. La verdad tiene buenísimas fotos y el contenido está explicado muy a detalle, totalmente disfrutable!

This book is a good read to go through. Especially for me since I can't decide between mechanical engineering and physics. ( I still couldn't decide after but it's still nice to read ) This book covers engines (the core of mechanical engineering) from steam to combustion and more, along with covering a little bit of electrical stuff relating to motors and generators. It is written well and in an engaging fashion, with a good mix of theory, application, and history / tidbits. It contains amazing pictures and some graphs of how engines work. My only minor grievance is that there is not enough theory behind the topics, some good explanations but little and few between. Some formulas would be nice, I get that there is a rule that for every formula the sales are halved but I wish the book would have disregarded this, I bet it has enough beautiful pictures to overcome the rule. Anyways, I'm off to go buy an old two stroke leaf blower engine from eBay and see how it works thanks to this book. If your planning on doing the same, do it outside, with a mask filter (look into mask filters / cartridges), gloves, and safety glasses. I think that is the safety stuff for disassembly.
