Q: Is there any guidance of how to washing before use? Would you also suggest cleaning periodically with Cafiza of something similar?

Soaked in Pulycaff solution pre use. Repeated every time I backflush my machine. Also rinse under pressure at the sink after each use ie spray water from tap through the disc. As it does such a good job of protecting the shower screen from coffee residue build up it results in a cleaner brew than without it. For clarity my machine is not an E61group

Q: What difference does the thickness make? this puck is 3 times the price of no name thin ones does it honestly make a difference please?

I think that the thickness means there is more space to diffuse the water before it hits the coffee puck. I'm not entirely sure on that but does this puck strainer make a difference? Yes. For me at least. My Gaggia classic tends to destroy the puck and leaves it soggy. With this puck strainer I get drier pucks that are more in tact and knock out easier. I do go to the effort of pre-heating it because it does suck some temperature from the water which does have impact but you can work around that and for me it's been a big change

Q: How long do these last for?

Its a fine metal disc so basically "forever". Just rinse after every use and clean with coffee granule cleaner once a week and should stay like new.
