A long-awaited abridgement of Raymond Brown’s classic and best-selling introduction to the New Testament Since its publication in 1997, Raymond Brown’s Introduction to the New Testament has been widely embraced by modern readers seeking to understand the Christian Bible. Acknowledged as a paragon of New Testament studies in his lifetime, Brown was a gifted communicator who wrote with ease and clarity. Abridged by Marion Soards, who worked with Brown on the original text, this new, concise version maintains the essence and centrist interpretation of the original without tampering with Brown’s perspective, insights, or conclusions. The biblical writings themselves remain the focus, but there are also chapters dealing with the nature, origin, and interpretation of the New Testament texts, as well as chapters concerning the political, social, religious, and philosophical world of antiquity. Furthermore, augmenting Brown’s commentary on the New Testament itself are topics such as the Gospels’ relationship to one another; the form and function of ancient letters; Paul’s thought and life, along with his motivation, legacy, and theology; a reflection on the historical Jesus; and a survey of relevant Jewish and Christian writings. This comprehensive, reliable, and authoritative guidebook is now more accessible for novices, general readers, Bible study groups, ministers, scholars, and students alike. Review: Perfect for the Scholar - So I actually have the original one Brown wrote and was going to use that for class....only it's super thick and we have to take notes on our chapters that we read. I finally caved and got this one, thankfully it was abridged by Brown too so I didn't have to feel like I was betraying a scholar and his words. This was perfect for my Gospels and Acts class. Review: Excellent book for all levels of interest in the New Testament - It's very comprehensive in its analysis and explanations of the texts. Brown did an admirable job providing insights into the daily lives and routines of the gospel writers, Pauline letters and the pastoral letters. I would recommend this book to anyone that has an interest in understanding the New Testament context rather than just by the daily readings and/or Sunday sermons.

Having been Marty Soards’ student for three years I have read quite a bit of Brown. I am glad to see this abridgement and hope to see more like this on Brown’s other big works. Soards’ brilliance and penchant for precision make volumes like this possible.

Helpful
I bought this for a Lay Ministry class and future reference. Most of it was pretty helpful and understandable, although at times it was harder to follow

A liberal perspective
It is what it says that it is, an introdution, and it would be unfair to expect anything else. However, this introduction is more heavily subjective than I think is helpful, and becomes more liberal because of it. With more critical scholarship and less oppinion this would have been a much better resourse. The book would have been better titled An introduction to Browns understanding of the Olt Testement. Having said that Brown does pose some questions that make the reader think, even if he dioesnt help with satisfying answers. An introduction that only putts one on a nodding aquqintance with the Bible. I couldnt recomend it.
