Excellent guidebook with one critique
Just got back from 2 weeks in Japan and found this Moon guide to be an trusty companion. I like that the author's personality and preferences come through while it still maintains an objective and comprehensive view of major sites, etc.My only -- and admittedly minor -- critique is that the Tokyo section is divided up first by interest (accommodation, food, shopping, nightlife) and then by neighborhood. I found this to cause lots of frustrating flipping back and forth. When we were staying in Shibuya, I just wanted all the info in one section and not to have to flip to one section to find restaurants and then flip 30 pages further to find nightlife, for example. The smaller cities have everything in one place, so that works well. I'd have just preferred for Tokyo neighborhoods to have grouped hotels, sites, food, shopping, performances all together.

I could have said more, but this book is a gem.
There are three things about Moon Japan that make it a 5-star travel guide: It is post-COVID and includes up-to-date information about traveling in Japan after the pandemic. The book is so helpful in many ways (even more than I expected). It feels like I have a friend in Japan walking me through all the steps to have a fulfilling, trouble-free trip no matter where I go or what I want to do. The writing is professional, knowledgeable and easy to read. Overall, a beautiful book. Very informative.

OK, but not as good as Frommers or Fodor's
I bought this based on reviews and had not seen in person. I really like having different types of examples itineraries and the ones in this book aren't great. Also, I would say that 2/3 of the food and kidding recommendations have not great reviews on every online review site. What's the point of the book then? For my next trip to Japan, I'll definitely get a different book.

Easy to use, great descriptions
Moon Japan is great, as are all Moon Travel Guides. Easy to read, fantastic maps and excellent descriptions of places to go, good hotels, etc. They are my #1 choice of travel books.
