Not what I was expecting
I was hoping for a story about Cree history. This is not what the story is about. I bought it for my young teens to read but it is not appropriate for them. I appreciate the artistry, but not the story. Definitely for older people if anyone at all.

Affecting
4.5 stars — Well that was hella affecting. The last 2 sections in particular had me crying and crying. What an intriguing way to show how the past can affect future generations, and how we can learn from them even as they are so different from our present.Beautiful artwork. I ached with the Scars section — so heartbreaking, and well depicted. This book definitely deals with some super hard topics, but does so in a way that it is easy to connect with and understand. I definitely felt for Edwin, even in his few teen angst moments. I think the balance was perfect, showing the magnitude of what he is feeling and how he has been affected by his missing father.A perfect blending of past and present, I got exactly what I was looking for and then some.

A strong and moving graphic novel
This is just an amazing book. I can’t truly relate myself to the protagonist, but I can imagine it. How hard it is to be a minority people, or even suffer from past memories. It is a really strong, and moving graphic novel. The colours alone are to be admired. Every word of it is has its own place, and pace. It is a well written book with a great sense of moral to the reader, and it deserves every second of the reader. Sure it starts off a little slow, and a bit difficult to understand. However, when you know the main concepts of this book (who’s this person, who’s talking), it’s a real masterpiece! This graphic novel deserves the “chef’s kiss”... or more like... the “author’s kiss”.

A beautiful, heart-wrenching story
This book is without question a must read for everyone, but especially Canadians of every variety. Through a masterfully woven narrative following the generations of a single family, it tells the story of the injustices faced by the indigenous people of our country, and the way they echo down the years to touch lives. At the same time, however, it is a story of healing and forgiveness, both on a personal and cultural level. Definitely a treasure amongst my collection
