Spillane & Collins’ “Kill Me If You Can” Is One Terrific Thriller! With Extras!
Max Allan Collins has once again completed an unfinished manuscript (actually an adaptation of 2 teleplays & a radio script) by the late Mickey Spillane and the result is another exciting thriller. With extras!KILL ME IF YOU CAN, released as part of the 75th anniversary celebration of the first appearance of Spillane’s private detective Mike Hammer, has the shamus overcoming personal demons and the disappearance of secretary/partner Velda to investigate the murder of an old friend. Meanwhile, is there a connection to Velda’s having gone missing to the crime? I can’t say more without spoiling some surprise twists (and one heck of an epilogue!) in the tale.As always, Mr. Collins accurately captures Spillane’s voice. The authors’ eye for detail in setting (this takes place in the 1950s, sometime between KISS ME, DEADLY and THE GIRL HUNTERS), characters’ clothing, appearances, and dialogue, as well as pacing, is solid. There’s not a dull moment to be found.Extras: In addition to the novel, there are five short stories adapted by Collins from unused teleplays by Spillane included. Two of the short stories feature Hammer, including one that introduces a familiar face from the detective’s supporting cast. This is a terrific collection from beginning to end. Definitely check out KILL ME IF YOU CAN!

Reminiscent of Spillane during his heyday! A real page turner.
A really good story that reminds me of classic Spillane as only Max Allan Collins can do.
