Straight Razors? You Bet!
Recently purchased to hone my straight razors. I looked at a similar Norton set up and got sticker shock. My straight razors had all fallen to a state of disrepair as my previous hone came to the end of a glorious career and just couldn't deliver anymore. For a few months, I shaved with safety razors and shavettes. At one point,, I even grew a beard. Fact of the matter was I missed my straight razors and wanted them back on line. The Sharp Pebble set offered an affordable, "fix it now" solution. No doubt, if I was a honing wonk, I could probably nit pick it to death, but I'm not. I'm just a regular guy who enjoys a well honed razor and a good straight razor shave. In this context I just couldn't be happier with these stones. They've truly delivered ridiculously keen edges the likes of which I've never seen. The platform and rubber gasket provide a totally stable platform. So far I've revived four straight razors. All of which scared the whiskers from my smiling face rendering a catfish belly smooth shave. You can bet when I wear these stones out, I'll be back to replace them in kind. For the price, you just can't beat it.

Great value, rubber base is handy!
I really appreciate that it comes with the rubber bases! I am beginning my own woodworking shop after graduating from woodworking school and having sharpening stones is important as a first step. These are not the highest quality stones out there, but they are great value - reasonably high quality for a good price. In addition to this 3000/8000 stone I have a 250/1000 stone from Lee Valley. Together with these I've sharpened all the plain-edged knives in the house and will soon be moving on to the chisels and plane blades after I put a hollow grind on them with the bench grinder. Sharp tools make a big difference! I'm not sure what the purpose of the extra white stone is - it says it is to flatten, but IMHO it is not a great idea to flatten the stones with something that small. I have a separate diamond lapping plate with a large surface area that I use to flatten the stones. It might be useful for sharpening awkward edges, like scissors and secateurs, though! I would recommend that you only purchase this product if you have lower grit stones in addition to this. 3000 and 8000 are really for honing and polishing, and it will take you a LONG time to sharpen a kitchen knife with only this combination of grits. However, once you have sharpened your knives these will be helpful for maintaining the sharp edge through regular honing. As another reviewer mentioned, the digital guide sent out with purchase mixes up the colors/grits, stating the green is 8000 and white 3000 whereas the stone itself is labeled with the green as 3000 and the white as 8000. Hope this is all helpful!

Really Good Stones (Bundled with 400/1000 stones)
Can achieve a really sharp edge with these stones. These were my first stones that I really learned to sharpen on. As long as you're only trying to sharpen and not repair or regrind an edge, these will do the job. 400 to 1000 alone is enough to get a razor edge. Would definitely recommend to anyone that doesn't sharpen often. There are a couple of things I need to mention though: 1. I found out that leaving them submerged in water all the time causes the stones to degrade. The stones develop a film that floats om the water and embeds into the surface of the stones. Also rust spots will tend to form if the stones are not completely cleared of all the metal removed from the knives. Not being able to leave them submerged is a hassle for me if I want to use them everyday. I have to make sure to soak them 30 mins everyday before I open to ensure they are saturated. 2. The stones become closer to 400 grit the more you use the leveling stone (I use it as a dressing stone. 400 grit is not coarse enough to level a stone). After flattening its best to use another grit thats close to the one of the stone. Eg after flattening the 3000 I would recommend using 3000 grit to dress the stone. Can be done with another 3000 grit stone, sandpaper, or abrasive powder. Haven't used them with high carbon knives but im sure it wouldnt be a problem. If these were splash and go stones, I would never buy another stone for work again. Going to replace these for nagura splash and go stones.

Great Sharpening Stone. 3000/8000 Excellent Results. Quality Product.
I was getting nowhere trying to sharpen our "nice" kitchen knives with my old oily Arkansas stone. Based on positive reviews, I decided to purchase the Sharp Pebble 400/1000 stone, the 3000/8000 stone and the Gladius Leather Strop. It was a great decision. To put Sharp Pebble to the test, I chose to sharpen a collection of various DULL Cutco knives and Spanish Henckel knives. I followed the soaking and prepping instructions for the stones and strop and then set out to sharpen the 10 DULL kitchen knives. It is important to read and follow the prep directions! I started out at the 400 and worked my way all the way to the 8000 then finished all of them off with the prepared strop. I am very proud of the results. These run of the mill “nice” knives are now VERY sharp. The Sharp Pebble product tutorial materials are super easy to read and follow. You need only apply some patience and practice. The Sharp Pebble products work very well and accommodate my skill set. I have full confidence in the Sharp Pebble products. When I am equally confident in my skills I will start sharpening our premium German Wusthof and German Henckel knives. The products arrived on time and very well packaged-no product damage or defects whatsoever. The Sharp Pebble products are great. I recommend purchasing the Sharp Pebble products.

Excellent for Beginners, Good Quality for Value
This was my first sharpening stone, and it’s exactly what I was expecting. It took a little bit of getting used to it, and I pushed too hard sometimes with my knives, but once you get the swing of it it’s really easy. I had an old, super chipped knife that I was able to make sharp again using this, and I’m quite happy with it. The only thing that might be an issue for some people is that even after using both sides (3000 & 8000), it still leaves visible scratches on the knife. I’ve got no problem with that, but if you’re planning on using this for expensive kitchenware/knives, I’d suggest something else. If you’re planning on using this just to sharpen your knives, this’ll do it just fine.

Too expensive for what you get
I can’t believe this is for beginners, which is me. I also can’t believe I spent so much money for a sharpening stone that is missing an essential ingredient for beginners—who would know that an angle blade holder even existed? The instructions are certainly minimal. I was trying to sharpen a knife by pulling *backwards* with the knife; had no idea you are supposed to push *forwards.* Also it wasn’t until searching for what 15-20 degrees looks like that I discovered that there are items that will actually guide you to get started on the proper degree angle, which of course is not included in the package. Now I must purchase a gizmo making the stone even more expensive. While the instructions do say to soak the stone before using, it was only after finding a Y-T video that I discovered to wet the stone again when turning it over. On the bright side the stone and bamboo base are quite heavy duty and should last for a long time. I wish I knew what grade stone should be used for kitchen knives: 3000/8000 or 1000/6000. I also wish I had looked a little deeper before buying is all.

Great product, sharp knives!
I've only used this to sharpen up a couple of knives so far but its easy to use and results are seen within minutes. Im also going to get one with a lower grit count as I have a couple of other knives with nicks in them. Great product and worth the money. A whetstone is much better than other knife sharpeners out there.
