desertcart.com: The Walking Dead, Vol. 7: The Calm Before: 9781582408286: Kirkman, Robert, Adlard, Charlie, Rathburn, Cliff: Books Review: I watched the TV show first (caught up as of 3/6/2016) before reading and holy crap these are awesome - I've purchased all volumes up to 22 and the TV show has just about caught up to wear I am in the novels. These books are friggen awesome. I don't read much and my buddy lent me VOL 1 after he knew I liked the show. Well, I burned through the first one and then just went on a tear buying 4 volumes at a time...the price is pretty good for what you get out of these. $9-$15 is the range I've paid per novel, I'm not sure why they aren't the same but anyways, I keep buying them none the less. The story was written before the TV Show and the show follows the story but there is some differences. The written story is more violent and graphic then the tv show but the tv show does a decent job of sticking with main ideas. I've noticed that certain plot things that happen in the book also happen in the show but there is a unique twist like a different character it happens to or something like that. Which makes reading these volumes great cuz I have some idea of where the story is going (after having watched all tv episodes) but there are still surprises. If you like the TV show and haven't read these, give it a try and you will get a whole new experience of the Walking Dead story. I'm putting this same review under every volume I've purchased (1-22) so people can see it. go buy these! Review: Great - Collecting the entire series

Another Great Installment
I got into the Walking Dead from the AMC show. Decided I wanted to read the comic, bought them all and read everything that was offered on the Kindle in 3 days. It just kinda sucks you in and drags you along wanting more. Cannot wait for the next installment. Did wish that each Volume had contained more issues like if you bought the paper ones, But that is how they make thier Money. Great story, best read from the beginning. Do not jump around.

Kirkman Breathes New Life Into The Undead
I'm going to assume that the majority of folks reading this are aware of the premise of this fantastic series of comics, penned by the great Bob Kirkman (Battle Pope, Marvel Zombies). The man knows how to write pulp narratives that transcend the genre. The Walking Dead isn't a zombie gorefest, but a smart, thought provoking, and original (hard to do in this genre) story about a group of survivors in the midst of a zombie holocaust, the manner in which they're forced to change as a result of their new environment, the resulting effect on their psyches, and various other trials and tribulations they must endure. The narrative is much more in the vein of the phenomenal George A. Romero films (yes, we all thought Land of the Dead sucked, but the first two were BRILLIANT, and Day of the Dead has moments that transcend its more kitschy elements), choosing to focus on human interaction and the ways in which survivors help and prey on one another. It's a very realistic and finely tuned approach to a completely absurd and often tired premise. Okay, now the down side: Small, but it does exist. Tony Moore (Battle Pope, Fear Agent, The Exterminators) was the original artist for the series, after which he was replaced by Charlie Adlard (pencils/inks) and Cliff Rathburn (colorist/greyscales). Moore also did the covers for a while, and was nominated for a couple of Eisner Awards. He no longer does either and it's a damn shame because the guy is incredibly talented. All due respect to Adlard, he was fighting a losing battle from the start... his work is mediocre at best and cannot compare to that of Moore's, which coupled with Kirkman's writing, made for a truly awesome alliance. I continue to buy each volume when it comes out because the storylines really are that good, but man, is it ever bittersweet.

Love love love the walking dead
This volume was an excellent read. I really have been enjoying the characters story lines. I would recommend the graphic novel series for anyone who has been enjoying the tv one.

Good Writing. Easy Read.
Walking Dead comics are just as good as the TV series. Even though many of the same characters are both in the comics and the TV series, they have developed into two totally different stories that occasionally overlap for the major plot points. I recommend both reading the comics, and watching the series. Awesome read!

I liked all the character progression
I think in this book they are really coming together as a group. All the interface problems are being worked out well

In This Case Ignorance Is NOT Bliss
Posted originally on my blog: [...] In the wake of the events at Woodbury, Rick and the group are moving back towards complacency in this latest volume. After Martinez has been disposed of, Rick figures there's no way the Governor could ever narrow down their location. Of course, this is only a facade as he is also trying to feign understanding to the idea that the baby Lori is carrying may be Shane's and not his. The group is still on edge and it shows as Patricia is mourning the loss of Otis and Carol continues to spiral. It's definitely not the time to be celebrating the birth of a new baby. What they don't realize is a huge threat is looming outside the fences and they are not as safe as they once thought they could be within the walls of the prison. The brief calm before the storm has passed and it's time for war against the Governor and Woodbury. I was a little disappointed in this particular volume because everyone is acting so ignorant to the threat the Governor poses on them. They are only a few miles from Woodbury and yet, the group tries to go back to their daily routine as if nothing happens. Glenn and Maggie get married, Lori has Judith, but in reality they are all just fooling themselves. They've become so preoccupied with faking it, they forget to really check in on those around them who are troubled... like Carol. She's already tried to commit suicide once and in this volume, she tries to befriend a walker, who promptly tears her throat out. Whose fault is it? Everyone's. Not just Carol's. The whole point of a community/group is to try and help one another. So yes, Carol did this to herself, but why didn't anyone bother to try to spend time with her and make sure she was okay?

Slower than previous issues, leading up to the inevitable but what a cliff hanger, bought next one already & would recommend you do the same to make this offering more substantial. That being said, still great walking dead to standard used to. Some significant plot & character development. As the front suggest, Lori's pregnancy is a significant factor but couple of surprises too. Enjoy
