Beginner or experienced, it's a great read
It's not often that you can sit down with 5 experienced professional photographers and discuss about photography. That's what this book offers. You may find some of the subjects covered to be known to you. Affirming what you have been doing for so long through experience or intuition to be correct is also useful. This books reads easily and it's not too technical. It's not a manual either, so the assumption is that you know a bit about your professional camera.I would recommend it without hesitation to photography enthusiasts.

Excellent for BEGINNER photographers
This is a great book with lots of useful easy to read and digest information for AMATEUR photographers. There is much less to gain from the book if you are an experienced photog but that is no reason to downgrade the rating for this book given its TARGET audience. The chapters are well organized, the book is well written and I really like that the pictures are accompanied with relevant information about the shot including basic things like the shutter speed and aperture.I would have loved to have had this book a few years ago when starting out my photography hobby. It would be a GREAT complement to the Scott Kelby series of books about Digital Photography: Scott Kelby's Digital Photography Boxed Set, Volumes 1, 2, and 3 , and Bryan Peterson's classic book on Aperture. The book is compact enough that you can take it on a holiday with you to get inspiration on the road and see how to take better photos in various situations on your trip. Highly recommended for NEW photographers.

For whom is this book written?
Let me start with the positive. This book is excellent in that it provides many photographic examples of the concepts discussed. Not just generally, but specifically. It seems that every paragraph or two there's a photo illustrating the point being made. I have read dozens of photography books, and I don't think any of them come even close to this one in that regard. So kudos are definitely deserved! However, I was disappointed with the book overall. Which is not to say it is horrible. It's not. It's fine. But only fine, not great. The biggest problem with the book is that I can't really tell who the intended audience is. The information is so basic and thin that it has to be intended for beginners. But then why does he start with a chapter on the gear he uses? He doesn't really describe the thought process that should go into gear selection; he just tells you what he uses. What good is that for a beginner? It comes across as no better than showing off. For a more advanced person, this might be helpful. But the rest of the book is much too basic.I guess I think this book might be useful for someone who is not a complete beginner. If this is your third, fourth, or fifth book on photography, it might be useful. It can reinforce things you've learned elsewhere, and actually helps by providing so many examples. But true beginners should hold off on this, and more experienced persons should probably pass.BTW, the chapters written by David Brommer and Steve Simon are excellent. I would read other books written by them! And, as to Simon, I have.)

An excellent book on photographic composition
This is a very good book on composition. It is well written and illustrated with multiple to the point examples. Its takes the reader from the very basic concepts of photography to more advanced concept all in a logical, easy to understand language. I found the book hard to put down once I started and I feel that this is because the authors great writing style.Update 2 weeks after having the book:The material read has sunk into my mind and I find that I am using the techniques for composition more and more even when I am not thinking about them. The book has fullfilled its mission to improve the skills of the photographer. I feel that the book has opened my mind to seeing the world in a different way allowing better composition.

Improve your photos with this book
This book was recently required as a text for an art photography class. As a traveler, I was greatfull the book was available in e-book format. I felt that all of the information and photos were valuable. The quality of the photo examples in the e-book wasa great surprise, as the grey scale was very detailed and complete.I would recommend this book, and the e-book version, highly.

Great Gift Book for Photographers and People who Like Photos
This book was the hit of the Christmas gifts. Not only did the person who receive the book ooh and ahh and spend time thumbing through it upon receipt and several times later in the day, but it became the sought after gift for everyone else to look at. Instead of people on their iPhones, they were sharing pictures from the book. From a photographers perspective, the book is detailed and also written so that the amateur photographer can understand it and learn how to shoot better pictures. The pictures are fabulous, whether desolate country, wildlife, beautiful nature scenes, and yes, even people.Truly an enjoyable book and one that I am purchasing more copies for gift giving during the year. An absolute steal for the price.

It's not exceptional
In truth I'm a bit disappointed. The book is ok but not exceptional. It's not the greatest "how to" get better composition in your photos book out there.I want a book like this to make me want to grab my camera and start to practice with the new found advice. I didn't feel like that at all with this book. The style of the book might suit some, but not me. Unfortunately this book is dwarfed by The Scott Kelby and Bryan Peterson books. They ARE good and would be my recommendation.

Some good information, but quite disappointed.
The book has a lot of basic and introductory information, such as exposure triangle, different kind of lenses and their field of views, etc. Only after those does the author start getting into composition. From what I can see, the author is mainly a nature and wildlife photographer, so a lot of her examples are of landscapes and/or animals. For myself, I was reading a lot of information about composition from online resources. I find it insufficient to rely on online articles or tutorials about composition, and hence I turned to published books. This book contains a lot of information that can be found online, which makes me feel quite disappointed as I was hoping to learn something new that couldn't be found online.Nonetheless, it's a great book for beginners who have little ideas about composition, but I was looking for something more with more detailed explanations on why certain compositions work and why sometimes breaking compositional rules might work better. Then again... I bought this book out of impulse and also because it was on sale... so I guess I didn't think it through properly.
