I have 205/55 r16 - will these fit? We are driving out to the Alps and want something for emergency in case it's snowy on the way up to resort.

I don't know if these would fit your car. I bought some snow socks for my Ford Fiesta as I had tried chains and found them rather hard work. The socks are less effective than chains and will have a much shorter life however they are much much easier to fit and for the short journeys which I undertake eg 5 miles up 10% gradients they are perfect. So far my socks have lasted two years and still seem fine. I'm using these in Alps north Italy.

Do these need to be removed as soon as one is on a surface with no snow ?

Ideally, yes they should be removed but a bit of bare tarmac is fine, but invariably you’ll encounter a mix of both. They just wear out quicker than when used on only snow or slush

Will these fit tyres with dimensions 195/55 R15?

They come in various sizes. All tyres have to have such information on them. All sites I've seen selling snow-socks have a 'size box' choice.
