Can you swap from right hand to left hand use?

Yes it can be reversed for left-handed use, although the programmable buttons 1-16 along the "top" for right-handers will lie under your arm when you turn the board around, and read upside down. You must also remember that the side control buttons are upside down when you use the programming tool if you want to configure them for a specific application. I have little sticky labels to remind me which command is coded to which button.

Can it be used independently like a normal tablet?

Not sure what you are asking - this is not a tablet like an iPad etc - it is purely an input device and needs to be connected to a computer with a screen. Independently it does nothing.
