Car Science: An Under-the-Hood, Behind-the-Dash Look at How Cars Work

Brilliant introduction guide to how cars work. love it
I bought this book because I wanted to have a better understanding of how my car work. I tried to ask my brother, but got nowhere!I bought a book aimed at adults, but it was too technical- I needed something that started at the very beginning. This is a large and fills my lap, it has easy to read font and bright big pictures. I feel it would make a ideal presents for kids interested in cars. And is a good way for parents to explain how their own cars work to their kids!I book covers in brief all the science involves in the design and running of a car in simple language and uses pictures to explain processes clearly. Since reading the book (missed some pages) I now have a clearer understanding of the technology is use in my own car. And I am proud to say a better understanding when my car failed its MOT.It covers the development of cars from the beginning, how different fuels are manufactured from crude oil, how steering systems work. The pictures make it easy to understand - gears, steering system and how the engine works. Its full of car facts, makes physics accessible (the importance of forces and friction)It has a range of classic and modern cars, so something to appeal to all car lovers.Suck, squeeze, bang, blow' is what goes on in my 306 engine!! A fun read for all ages

Excellent book for the inquiring mind
I bought this for my 7 year old son to encourage his love for cars beyond just knowing models and top speeds. This book is laid out in a logical way that makes sense to a young mind, covering energy, combustion, car parts (pistons etc) and other elements of science for an inquiring mind. My son loves it and while he reads snippets of the text around loads of attention-grabbing graphics, I know he'll return to this book time and again over the next few years as his reading and comprehension improves and really get the most out of it as it is suitable for kids aged 8 to about 12. I'm so pleased we found a book that promotes science in a real world way and really speaks to my son's obsession with cars. (Plus he's really impressed it's written by the guy from Top Gear)

There's more to cars than asking your Mum for a lift.
Another great DK book packed full of information and images. This one is about cars in which I generally have absolutely no interest - except this was about car science and I was hooked at where the two subjects converge.I knew the basics of how an internal combustion engine worked, but I had never connected a piston to a crankshaft or considered how this made the wheels go round. Then to find out about the different numbers of pistons and their arrangement in an engine (from 1 in a lawnmower up to the V8 of the Aston Martin) was all very interesting and enlightening.I already knew the origin of fossil fuels - but then the crude oil was separated into its various components for meWe started talking physics of aerodynamics, velocity, terminal velocity, friction, acceleration, centrifugal force, gravity and how these can apply to situations like turning corners, breaking, skidding and how an F1 car works and the driver is protected. This really is a very interesting book and despite other reviewers saying they have bought it for ten year old kids I would love to have a smaller edition of this for my own book shelf (I bought this large book as a gift).

How it works, Cars.
Not sure that the aims of teaching 8-9 year olds about car engines have been met. Or that a picture of 170 horses necessarily gives the idea of 170 HP.But very much a fun book. I bought it for our local primary school when one little boy whose reading I was monitoring said he was interested in books that gave factual information. The book he had wasn't too interesting so I asked what things was he interested in? He said Cars and Space. There were no books in the school library about cars. There's one now.

Really interesting, engaging book for all ages!
My 5 year old boy ABSOLUTELY LOVES this book! He's learned all kinds of facts about "Fully submersible vehicles", how we get oil and petrol and all kinds of technical engine-y type stuff that even I didn't know! It's probably a bit old for a 5 year old, but if there's an interest already I highly recommend it!

Definitely get this book if you’re curious about this topic
Now, I admit this book isn’t aimed at my age group (25) but that doesn’t bother me because I’m just curious about the topic. It is probably aimed at late primary early secondary age kids. But for that reason it is fantastic. If you’re interested in learning how cars work, this gives you everything you need to know. In billy basic simple to understand terms, with the real science applied.
