This is a brief, yet comprehensive, introduction to the art of painting in oil. It covers the basics simply but not simplistically and includes generic information on painting that is useful regardless of one’s choice of medium. Perhaps her best advice comes at the end, “Go for it.”

Somewhat disappointed as this seems to be more style over substance
Somewhat disappointed as this seems to be more style over substance. Hazel Soan is a great artist and I was hoping for more specific guidance on technique. This is more a showcase for Hazel's own work, with little direct instruction or insight into technique. Useful subject matter prompts, but little in the way of detailed help. Her on-line videos are more useful.

Good beginners guide!
Excellent starter guide to oil painting - covers all the basics and provides a good check for when you start painting. Easy to read and good images to go with it. It won't tell you everything, but it tells you enough to get started!

All the information in a tiny book.
Just starting in oils, chose this based on how useful Hazel Soan`s watercolour books have been.....they have improved my technique enormously. Now looking to a medium that I can work on over a longer period, This book is every bit as encouraging as Hazel`s other books and should see me through the early steps.

As ever Hazel Soan is pure inspiration ,her enthusiasm for the subject leaps off the page.Instructions are clear & concise with numerous tips to simplify the process, I wish I had this book when I first started painting with oils.

Worth the wait
Easy to read and digest information, have waited a long time for Hazel to do a book on oils, as all her previous books were on Watercolours and were excellent as this is, a must for any budding oil painter.

This book is exactly what I was looking for. I am an acrylic painter that wanted to break into oil painting. This book covers all the essentials to get started and answered many of the questions I'd had from watching YouTube videos on the subject.

Really helpful information.
This little book is crammed full with all the information you need to get started with oils. The text is supported by a generous amount of full colour illustrations to further guide the beginner.

Learn Oils Quickly by Hazel Soan is so worth owning no matter what medium you paint in.
This is a terrific book by Hazel Soan. I am an oil painter for the last 9 years and can always learn more. (I studied with several wonderful oil painters - Scott Christensen and Matt Smith - but I was painting only in pastel at that time.) This book has become part of my collection of Hazel Soan books. My wish is that it was the same size as her other books I own - 9 1/4" x 10 1/4". The wonderful images would be larger - very worth it. I am inspired to travel to the coast or big body of water - best I have where I live here in the desert Southwest is a tiny trail of water called Santa Fe River!

Useful basics
Easily understood basic techniques. Easily accessable and inexpensive tools. Now I can jump in and experiment. I am a beginner to painting.
