Comprehensive and well researched
This excellent book by Linda Bloomfield contains invaluable information about the formulation of glazes. Linda has a science background and a sure grasp of her subject. The writing is clear and informative. The Book is well structured and Linda explains the complexities of combining glaze ingredients with considerable insight. Stoneware, porcelain, earthenware, raku and crystalline glazes are all covered and the book is well illustrated with photographs. Example glaze recipes from a wide range of sources are included and I came away from the book with a renewed desire to make experimental glaze tests of my own. Although focused on electric kiln firing the book also has examples of live flame ceramics and glaze recipes for comparison. A comprehensive and well researched guide for anyone who wants to start making their own glazes and a worthy addition to the library of the studio potter.

Beginner level
The promotion for this book gave the impression that it would be useful for those wishing to develop further skills in glaze making however it turned out to be rather basic. Would be a good buy if your just starting out but even then there are more comprehensive books - I would recommend for example 'The Potters Palette'by Constant and Ogden which has much more informative general information on mixing and applying and a fantastic and beautifully presented range of recipes.

If you only buy one book on glazing - make it this one!
As a potter just beginning to get to grips with glazing, ths book is an absolute lifeline for me! It includes everythng needed to get to grips with the basics in a readable, easy to understand way. It covers all the basic glaze ingredients, explaining their function within a glaze. Full of clear and very helpful photographs, it then systematically goes through each colour, with recipes suitable for each type of clay. More technical information is included in the appendices.

At last I understand
Of all the books about glazes I've read recently this is the best. It explains what each of the chemicals do and how to achieve different colours and surface qualities. Using this in conjunction with 'The Potter's Palette' (Constant and Ogden) and 'The Potters Recipe Book' (Cooper) I know have the confidence to experiment in a way that I never have before.

A really useful text
A potter's journey is an experimental one, especially when it comes to the quest for a good glaze. The author achieves a good balance here. The right blend of technical and practical information and advice, with an array of useful illustrations.A text which gives me the confidence to continue the quest with an increased understanding of the processes involved and a desire to push the boundaries still further.

Good information. Very thorough explanations
Good information. Very thorough explanations. Would like to have seen more recipes, perhaps with low fire, stoneware, and high fire in separate categories.

A quand la version française?
Très utile pour tous les céramistes curieux de mettre au point leurs propres émaux. Notions accessibles sans connaissances très pointues ni calculs de formules.

Lovely colours
Although I haven't even started to try out all the recipes and advice in this book, it looks very complete and useful for anyone trying to understand and apply glazes.

A Must Have for Your Library of Ceramics Books
If you're like me, you were concerned about buying a relatively short book in paperback for thirty dollars. I hate paperback books, and that is one of the only drawbacks to this title. Otherwise, this is one of the few books on glazing from this century that is worth buying. It is a recipe book in part, but I probably wouldn't buy this book on that basis alone. The unique thing about this book is that it explains some of the complex scientific principles of glaze chemistry in terms that most people can understand. In fact, I would go so far as to say that if you don't understand now or don't understand after looking some stuff up, you probably shouldn't bother with formulating your own glazes. But, if you enjoy mixing and testing glazes, this book is a must have. Dr. Bloomfield has clearly explained the role that each of the common glaze components plays in a formula, with recipes and photos that illustrate those effects. It even goes into some of the off the wall ingredients that most people never use, such as rare earth colorants.I didn't buy this for the recipes, rather to better understand the role of each ingredient in glazes. I should also mention that I am not a chemist and I understand the principles set forth in this book. So, if you are like me, this is the book you have been waiting for. Well, still waiting for a hardback version.

I hope to develop glazes, and this book is super helpful. The chemistry given will be useful. One feels well-guided.It is also beautifully illustrated.

Complex but useful
This book is not for beginners in glaze mixing! It has many great tips and helpful information, but it is geared more to serious potters and those already well acquainted with glaze chemistry. It has great information about how different chemicals react together that would be very beneficial to those who are wanting to create a new or unique glaze.

hmmm...
This book rides an awkward boundary between science and practical studio use. In doing so, it fails to do either well. The chemistry behind the colors are sort of half-explained with useful tidbits here and there. And there are also recipes. But the theory explanations don't go deep enough to allow the user to readily understand and alter the recipes. At least it's considerably better than "The Handbook of Glaze Recipes" I just purchased by the same author...

Chock Full of Helpful Tools
Great book with a wide range of glaze possibilities in different cones. Since i work mainly in an electric kiln at cone 6 I'd of prefered more glazes in that temperature. But since I realize this was not a specialty Glaze Cone 6 book I knew that going in buying it. I highly recommend this book to anyone needing a general knowledge base and especially to anybody working in different cone temperatures and kiln atmospheres
