I just began German classes 2 weeks ago and the material seems very well designed for its purpose, the books are complemented by a dedicated web site and and app (which have't tried yet). Note that in my personal experience I have a 2 hrs session once a week with a german teacher.

A great introduction to German
The layout of the book is good, the level progresses well, if a little slowly in my opinion, but then it depends entirely on the learner. It's colourful, and mostly relevant to everyday life, without being too childish (as a lot of beginners books often are). I'd definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to start learning German.

Only fair condition - and one CD missing. Book itself lacks structured approach to grammar
I bought this book as being recommended for my German course. The older Orange Second Edition as that was the one the teacher had. (The newer Blue Third Edition which some of the class bought was slightly, annoyingly different - page numbers out by 4 or 5 pages and the questions slightly different.) The book itself lacks a structured approach to grammar - or grammar reference section. It is all a bit Idiot's Guide - maybe some people get on with Idiot's Guides. The book itself was second hand - advertised as good condition - but came a bit beat up, with pencilled in answers - and one of the two CDs missing

Make quick progress in German Buy this book ,'
The book is well planned to cover all areas of useful language. I have made very good progress using this book with the activity book but the book can be used very well alone Most recently I have studied street direction and the time. I quite enjoyed athe section with penfriend letters and also hotel information inGerman because the language in these sections is what I feel most relevant to my individual travel needs. The grammar sections are very useful I have made good progress in applying and understanding grammatical rules in the German language through using Willkommen.

A Good Start
Had bought this because I have joined a German group with my local U3A. Did not buy the CD and feel without it you are restricted in some use of the book as reference if often made to the CD and the exercises contained in it. Otherwise I have found it very useful and straightforward.

Not basic enough for complete beginners
This is the course book for my German evening class (beginners term 1) and we were also told to get the activity book. However about two weeks in the teacher announced that she doesn't like the book and asked us to buy secondhand copies of the book she used to use (Let's Talk German by Peter Sutton- now out of print) instead. We have since combined both books, but focusing mainly on Let's Talk German. The teacher does not like the way things are introduced and says that we might revert back to Willkommen when we know more. From this I conclude that if you are a complete beginner this book is not the best one to start with.

Excellent starting point for new learners
A very good introduction to the German language, perhaps particularly for the older learner (in my case in my late sixties). The scenarios (the shop, the hotel, public transport etc.) are just the ones a tourist is most likely to encounter and the conversations illustrated are quite easy to understand. There is an accompanying CD (available separately) with the conversations in spoken German, which is also very helpful.

Chaotic mess
On the plus side, this book has a wealth of exercises designed to help you learn natural German speech patterns. That's about it. The format is an appalling mess--a jumble of text and pictures that looks like it has been put together by an editor who's spent too much time in the bierskeller, and who spent his childhood making collages with scissors and paste. If you forget something, or you want to find out what a German word or phrase means, you will be out of luck. There is a brief English-German glossary at the back, but otherwise nothing in the way of an index. Everything is scrappy--although there is some reinforcement, it is not systematic. It seems to be designed on the theory that if you throw enough mud at the wall, a bit of it will stick. At the moment I am trying to extract enough information from the book to enable me to follow my adult ed evening course. Alas, trying to impose order on this mess isn't easy. One gets the feeling that the authors' main concern was to destroy forever the notion that the Germans have a genius for organising things.
