I had read reviews that this book was too technical and scientific to be of practical use. I strongly disagree.One of the contentions of the book, in fact, is that we really still do not have a solid grasp on the physics of sound overall. There are just too many variables. That said, applying what we CAN test for would seem to help us avoid the worst design gaffes when planning for recording studio construction. The author has been designing multi-million-dollar studios for several decades, so he is a credible source of critical information. If nothing else, this book has helped confirm my design choices for a LEDE ("live end/dead end") home project studio I'm working on.Yes, it's expensive, but it's nearly 850 pp., and the money you'll save by sharpening your design ideas with this book will pay for it 10x over, in both costs and avoidable headaches. No use whining about it: you need this book if you're designing a recording studio. Pony up the dough and buy this before you purchase your first sheet of drywall or 2x4.

Sehr umfangreich, anschaulich und detailliert. Newell schafft es, selbst komplexeste Sachverhalte mit einfachen Beispielen, Anekdoten und Vergleichen sehr anschaulich auf den Punkt zu bringen. Wer selbst ein Studio oder auch nur einen einzelnen Regie- oder Aufnahmeraum bauen möchte, kann sein Geld kaum sinnvoller investieren, als in dieses Buch. Wer lieber mit erfahrenen Studioplanern zusammenarbeiten möchte, kann sich nicht besser auf Planungsgespräche etc. vorbereiten, als mit diesem Buch. Über 800 Seiten geballtes Fachwissen sind natürlich nicht ganz ohne, aber jedes Kapitel wird am Ende in kurzen "Merksätzen" zusammengefasst, was sehr dabei hilft, sich das Gelernte einzuprägen. Die vielen Quellenangaben bieten zu jedem Thema weiterführende Literatur und man hat den Eindruck, dass der gesamte Inhalt sowohl theoretisch als auch praktisch sehr fundiert ist. Die Grafiken sind schwarz/weiß, aber reichen m.E. nach vollkommen aus, um die Inhalte zu vermitteln. Unbedingt kaufen!

This book has lots of formulae etc but is not easy to read or well presented. In short it’s too complicated. If you’re looking for straight forward advice and diagrams/pictures on how to build a garage studio or convert an existing space then this isn’t the book for you.
