Dishing out Payne at its best
What can I say, if your a R* fan and a fan of games such as GTA and the Acclaimed Red Dead Redemption then you will, probably love this 3rd installment of the Max Payne series. Set later on in Max's life, a washed up drunk addicted to you guessed it pain killers, our hero find himself a hired gun for a rich family set in South America. Expect lots of gun toting action with clever AI and stunning visuals and a very gripping story line. The only downsides I can offer are in single player there are a lot of cut scenes which are also loading screens so the story blends well but once played through can be a drag when you've already had to sit through them once. Secondly and for me the most annoying and frustrating element is the camera work in multiplayer, it really works against you and can be very annoying. There are a great range of online multiplayer modes, but gang warfare offers a really good variation on different v's game modes split over 5 scenarios with the last scenario being an all out team death match All in all a very good game with a few little gripes that you will probably learn to live with

This is MAX PAYNE3, NOT GTA5!
Yes this is a game made by Rockstar. No it isnt a sandbox. In fact, it is the very antithesis of what the development house are known for. Does it suffer for this? Not in the slightest. Max Payne has always been about bringing early John Woo cinematics and film noir dialogue and atmosphere together in a 3rd person shooter. If you want more from a game, then sit back and wait for GTA5 later in the year. But if a stylish and refreshingly challenging shooter is what you are looking for, then you have come to the right product. The story is compelling, and true to the vibe of the first 2 games. I have heard many complain about the length/frequency of cutscenes, but they signify end of levels or 'chapters' in the story only, and as well as being appropriate, are brilliantly scripted and voice acted. Its nowhere near as obtrusive as in the Metal Gear series, and is more on a par with Uncharted 2/3 Graphics are fine - not earth shattering, but the animations, bullet FX, and killcams are excellent, and environments are fully destructable and nicely detailed. Gameplay is where the game excells though. Firstly, and most importantly, there is no 'magic' health regeneration, you have a good old fashioned energy bar (pass the sanatogen if you remember these too), and while there is a cover system, most things you can duck behind can be shot through and destroyed quite quickly. Add to this that if you try and 'camp' the AI flanks you quickly, and bots are happy to throw grenades to flush you out, and it soon becomes evident that playing it 'safe' in this game is anything but. Instead you are encouraged to grab an uzi in each hand and leap through the air towards your enemies like a slow-mo lead pumping missile. As their bullets whizz past your body, missing you by inches as your own find their (usually multiple) targets, and bodies and blood fly, something wonderful happens - you begin grinning. You feel like Dirty Harry, Neo, and John McClane rolled into one. Even after all these years, controlling Max feels cool as hell, and with such a refined animation and shooting mechanic, its new 'old school' at its finest. As an old school game though, you do get moments of intense frustration - this is not a game that wants you to beat it, and while targeting assist helps, in some sections you need to use your slo-mo advantage to go beyond 'centre mass' auto targeting and look for the killshot, or else you run out of ammo, and life remarkably quickly. This just forces you to become better at the game, and solve the 'puzzle' of each battle area. The guns are all nicely balanced, and have a 'weight' to them, and its nice to see shotguns that really are range specific (Infinity Ward take note). The set pieces (sniping and shooting from vehicles sections) are not earth shattering, but they work well within the story, and the game. Dont expect jaw dropping OMG moments like the Gears of War series gave us, think more 80's action movie/TV cop show and your pretty much there. So this is not a typical 'Rockstar' game, and should not be purchased by those seeking such. It is, to its heart, a Max Payne game, and judged by that standard, its a roaring success.

Max Payne 3
This game, in my opinion is one of Rockstar's best. I preordered it because I wanted a new game and it looked like it could be the best April release. I got it on release day and have been playing it whenever I can ever since. I'm currently on Chapter 7 and I went straight in to the hardest difficulty available at the beginning (hard) and I really like the fact that health doesn't regenerate. This provides a really good challenge and means you can't just run straight into enemies and shoot every one of them whilst taking minimal damage. I can see myself playing through it again to get the higher difficulty related achievements. Graphics wise, the game is incredible. They are slightly better than the LA Noire graphics - which were, I think, the best graphics on a video game so far. Some people say the cutscenes are annoyingly frequent and I had never played a Max Payne game before, but for me they tie in perfectly with the gameplay. The shooting is much like Red Dead Redemption and when I used bullet time, I instantly thought of dead-eye - which isn't a bad thing. I also think shootdoge is a great feature. The achievements list (if you're interested in that) provides for me just the right amount of challenge. Overall, I would say this is possibly the best game on Xbox 360 at the moment and definitely Rockstar's best.

Gets very old very quickly.
Having never played the series prior to this entry to the series from Triple A game developers R*, I was initially pleasantly surprised with their efforts. The game is somewhat challenging on every difficulty, but if you are a player who goes for achievements, you are required to do Four playthroughs just to get the difficulty achievements as they do not stack. Add into this the New York Minute Game Mode and NYM Hardcore Game mode and you are looking at 6 total runs of this game. The games clunky and slow controls are well hidden behind the fast paced action and slick cinematics but when you come to playing New York Minute Hardcore, where every mistake counts, as failure of any kind reverts you back to the start of the entire game, you start to notice the bugs and aforementioned poor controls much more regularly. Weapons will sometimes not fire during cinemtaic sequences, the camera locks in place and will not allow you to run for several seconds-more than enough time for some favela fiend to riddle you with an entire magazine of Warsaw Pact ammunition. The cinematic sequences become old very quickly and happen far too often, slowing the game down and in some cases reversing the controls in a bizarre fashion, meaning that trying to speed the process up by moving during them can result in falling off ledges to your death. The "last man standing" system of reviving yourself is also often flawed as Max will often fall into unnatural positions with his arm behind his back or into low cover, meaning that you cannot hit the enemy that last hit you, and thus can't revive yourself. By the end of the game, enemies take far, far, far too many rounds to kill and it is not always possible to go for a headshot, hit indication, enemies running out of the playable area (and you chasing them, resulting in failure), and being shot when obviously in cover/out of the LoS (Line of Sight) of enemies are also occasional issues. You will come to dread the Escort missions as leaving the games invisible parameters will result in an enemy magically appearing and playing a cut scene in which your ally will be executed despite being in a room/part of the room you have cleared. All this is confounded by a Multiplayer which feel increasingly more and more like it was tacked-on every time you play it. Weapon effects (which are half decent in single player up to the last few missions) really are abysmal in multiplayer (though no where near as bad as post-patch Battlefield 3's are)and seem far to benefit Sniper Rifle Users and Duel Wielders far too much. To summarize it really could have been a great game, but the massive amount of bugs, freezing issues, shockingly bad multiplayer and poor scripting/ enemy A.I. choices should see this in the bargain bin relatively soon. A very mediocre effort from a company that normally delivers so much.

A great return of a gaming legend.
This game is a wonderfully refreshing change from the first person shooters that have dominated the market for so long. Yet again Rockstar have produced a winner that uses a gripping narative and smooth action to deliver a gaming experience that is well worth the money. For those who are familiar with the genre, Max is a manically depressed alcoholic now ex-cop who struggles with his inner demons with the aid of various narcotics in order to forget the past. Essentially, he's no all american hero, which gives a nice change to the cliche super cop out to save the world. Max's story is told through lengthy cut scene's that are superbly directed and contain voice acting that goes above and beyond where a video game is concerned. The scene's are designed as if from a cctv camera, with the occasional fuzz screen built in. This gives an interesting perspective, as if it's being told from the blurred memories of an alcoholic. It could be said that these cut scenes are a tad over indulgent and a way of padding out the campaign as most of them can't be skipped due to the fact that they disguise the loading screens. However, it's a small price to pay when they're so intuiging to watch and allow for you to be fully emerced in the story. The presentation is superb, but as with special effects in film, good graphics are the status quo in this day and age. Never the less, Rockstar delivers them well with some brilliant environment designs ranging from classy night clubs to grotty slums. The environments all have a destructible edge to them, so as the bullets fly glass shatters and concrete crumbles all around you. What's probably the most impressive is the detail where gore is concerned. Each bullet makes it's own unique cavity in a victims body. An enemy will then react differently depending on where they are shot. This all hits a climax when you kill the last enemy in a group and an automatic slow motion kill camera starts up which shows up close the damage that you're doing and boy is it nasty. The occasional bug does occur but when the machine is being pushed to it's limits it can't be helped. Unfortunately a small glitch is made all the more obvious by the immaculate surroundings. So the occasional blurred surface or cut scene bug stands out all the more, though these never really impact significantly on gameplay. Finally, the gameplay is magnificent. Anyone who has played other Rockstar productions, GTA4, Red Dead Redemption etc will be familiar with the third person shooting style. What makes this experience unique is Max's ability to go into "bullet time", where everything goes into a matrix style slow motion. This naturally gives Max somewhat of an unrealistic advantage over the magnitude of enemies pressing down on him but who cares. This signture of Max gives the game an awsomely cinematic feel. Once the controls have been mastered it's possible to move fluidly from cover to cover, outmanouvering your enemies taking very little damage while dealing out one hell of a lot of pain to them. A significant improvement over the last games is the way that Max now handles far more realistically. Dive into a wall and funnily enough you're stopped in your tracks and fall to the floor with a grunt. It's all very smooth and despite the advantage held with bullet time, enemies are smart and provide an excellent challenge, espescially on the harder difficulty settings, as they will attempt to make flanks and cover each other as well as being a pig to kill when wearing body armour. The odd flaw can be encountered for example when Max goes into a last stand mode and is at a strange angle so can't kill anyone which then leads to your death. In addition, the aim assist is a bit strange at times so using the free aim mode is recomended for more fluidity and to add an extra dimension the the challenging play. So overall a very cleverly crafted and well presented game. Probably a game that sells more for the campain than the mulitplayer, as the online experience is certainly fun but honestly is never going to compete with the big names in online gaming. Never the less, this is yet another superb production from Rockstar that provides an enthralling storyline and addictive gameplay that ensures excellent value for money.

over-hyped
I cannot believe i have just played the same game as some of the 5 star reviews....Ok , so it looks nice....SO WHAT ....The game is terrible...multi player is laughable...wont even bother saying anything more on it, as it is not worth my time....But , the single player..Rockstar hang your head in shame...The stupid amount of cut scenes really start to grate ....and whats with the silly blurring and double vision ALL the time..We get it...MAX likes a drink but i don't want to feel like i've had a skin full when i play it ...Mind you , that might have helped me get over the fact i wasted my hard earned cash on this tripe!!!!!

Max payne 3 - the game review
Wow! This game is good, like most Rockstar games. Ok- the storyline is really good and really understanding if you Brazilian. Some of the game your like "what are you saying?" as some of it is in Forgein language and some of it is in english. Even if you put the subs on it doesn't make any difference. But apart from that, this is superb game. The shooting is really good, esp when it goes into slow motion mode like the Eagle eye in Red dead. Online is a bit plain and could of extended the maps a bit more, but apart from that is really good. Career mode is to me the best and like I said the storyline is outstanding. Overall Rockstar has made another great game, so bring on GTA 5 next year! 5*

Where is the game?
I think this game is going to divide opinion somewhat, but in the end my own personal view is that it is not much of a game at all. This is more an interactive story which you get to participate in occaisionally. You follow the story of Max Payne who is now a drunk drugged up gun for hire protecting a rich 'Mafia like' family in South America. The head of the family's wife is kidnapped by an unknown gang who themselves then become targets for yet another unknown gang (of paramilitaries this time). Your involvement as a player is to occaisionally take control of Max to despatch a set number of villains in a very smalled closed environment. You have the fabled bullet time to help you through this, and it seems Rockstar have placed a larger number of enemies than normal to encourage you to use it - you don't have to though and I found myself not bothering as it seemed to get you into more trouble than it was worth. There is the occaisional 'mini game' thrown in like Sniping from a Helicopter or manning the MG of a speeding boat. It is all rather remeniscant of a popular FPS that we all know about. The grahics are very nice and the character animations are especially brilliant. The soundtrack is good and the voice acting in the main is very good indeed. The problem is that there is no game to speak of -other than the afore mentioned mini-games, the action remains the same - it ultimately gets very tedious. Also, maybe because the family you are protecting are not the nicest in the world (in fact they are particularly loathesome), plus the fact that Max hates himself as well, you find yourself not caring if you complete the task or not. Technically this is a great proof of concept (especially for the character animations) but it falls far short of the standards I expect of Rockstar for a game you want to play. Red Dead Redemption remains the last good game they made. I played the online with a friend for am hour or so and it is nothing special. It is clunky and awkward and offers nothing that you can't find in countless other online games. There are a number of game modes you need to unlock before you can play them - suffice to say I will never see these modes. Conclusion is that this is probably worth a couple of nights rental but not one to buy. I think Rockstar can do much better than this.

Just nice.....amazing
Max Payne's home has always been on the PC. The original 2001 game and its sequel debuted on the PC, and though they received console versions--some of which captured the excellence of their PC counterparts and some of which didn't--it was on PC that he first made his mark. Times have changed for Max, and his latest outing hit consoles first and PC second, which may raise concerns about whether, this time around, it's the PC version that feels secondary and the console versions that feel definitive. As it turns out, such concerns are unfounded. Max Payne 3 is just as gorgeous and intense on PC as it is on consoles, and the pinpoint precision offered by a mouse makes the PC version the best way to enjoy this brutal and haunting shooter. Wherever you go, there you are. It's a truth Max Payne knows better than anyone. Fleeing his New York life to take a job working security for a wealthy family in Sao Paulo, the hard-drinkin', pill-poppin' Max finds that his demons come along for the ride. Though the details of the plot add up to your typical story of conspiracy and corruption, of the rich and powerful preying on the poor and helpless to become even more rich and powerful, the writing, acting, and presentation elevate this tale well above a boilerplate video game crime story. It's hard to stay ambivalent once you see the horrors being suffered by the innocent here, and you'll likely want to see Max's quest for vengeance through to its conclusion just as badly as he does. Max reveals a complexity here not seen in earlier games, as he hits rock bottom and must either stay there or face his demons head-on and make himself anew. Other characters, too, reveal a surprising humanity. You might be tempted to write off Marcelo, the youngest brother in the wealthy Branco dynasty Max is hired to protect, as the shallow playboy he often appears to be. But in moments of disarming honesty, he reveals to Max a depth that lies beneath the facade he presents to the world. Cutscenes use multiple moving panels to pay homage to the graphic-novel-style storytelling of previous games without feeling beholden to it, and the considered use of blurring and other visual effects echo Max's state of mind, perhaps making you feel as if you're the one who has been hitting the bottle a little too hard. James McCaffrey does an excellent job reprising his role as Max, bringing a wider range of emotions to a character who has previously often been one-note. The writing is terrific; Max's world-weary wit is as bone-dry as ever, and as he ruminates on things like loyalty and loss, much of what he says has the sound of hard-earned wisdom. Subtle touches throughout the game make Max seem convincingly alive, such as the complex look that crosses over his face at the start of one stage when bloodshed seems inevitable; it's as if he dreads what's coming, but does his best to mentally prepare himself for it.

Loving it
Bought it for my XBOX 360 Xbox 360 4GB Console (also bought from Amazon)... This game gives the same experience and pleasure as earlier 2 Max Payne titles, only with better graphics, greater gameplay. And yes if you are worried about the bald look, among the 2 DVD story, Max does have hair all the time in DVD 1 just like old time... only at the end of DVD 1 story, he shaves it :) Does not matter if you are a Max Payne fan or not, just buy it now when it is only Rs 350, if you don't want to regret later :)

Good job, Rockstar!
Max Payne series is one of the best series that Rockstar games publishes. Well, I had great expectations of how the game play would turn out. Even with improved graphics, controls it was disappointing. The first 15 minutes unskippable cut scene, Unwanted movements, ridiculous health of the protagonist took the spark away. For a easy game play even in harder difficulty, simply enable the auto-aiming and you are done! Press and Hold LT then fire with RT and release both of the triggers. Repeat this as wanted. Story is somewhat interesting though. Hence my 4 stars out of 5 stars!
