Assassin's Creed Rogue (Xbox 360)

May the Father of Understanding guide us all
When Rogue was announced a lot of people said it was going to be a glorified DLC to Black Flag. They were wrong. While, yes, they did borrow a lot from Black Flag, the combat and naval combat being lifted straight from it, it is a good game in its own right. It should be noted that the modern day segments heavily reference the AC: Initiates game. The story follows former Assassin Shay Cormac as he defects to the Templar Order after a mission causes him to create the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. It is set in the Seven Years War, though this is more of a backdrop than anything else, unlike the American War of Independence and the French Revolution. The game does a very good job of actually portraying the Templars as the good guys. Don't get me wrong, all of them except George Monro and Haytham Kenway are unlikable really, but they are sympathetic. Shay is also an interesting character. Not once does he kill his former comrades without remorse, always begging their forgiveness when he does even though he has to.Visually its as impressive as Black Flag was. You get three main areas as opposed to a huge overworld; the North Atlantic around Newfoundland, the Hudson River valley and a completely redesigned New York City, all of which are pretty big this time. Since you play as a Templar you also take out Assassin Bureaus as well as forts. This is an interesting mechanic that can be pretty tense, but can be equally frustrating in the harder areas. You also get Assassin Interceptions where you have to kill a group of Assassins before they kill a Templar agent. This is fun, but is also somewhere where staying in Eagle Vision while running would be welcomed. The combat is as easy as Black Flag unfortunately, basically spam the counter button and you're invincible. You do get some new toys as well, one being the firecracker dart which can be used to lure enemies and a grenade launcher that can shoot sleep, berserk and shrapnel grenades. The ship combat is a LITTLE different, you have puckle guns instead of swivel guns, which gives off a slow machine gun effect and lets you attack at any time with them. You get the charge attack very early on, instead of having to defeat the Legendary Ships and instead of fire barrels you get burning oil. The Morrigan is also a schooner, which means that it is nimbler and faster, but has less attack power.Like Black Flag, you get a sort of fleet minigame, this time it chronicles the Templar movements during the Seven Years War. Unfortunately, this isn't expanded upon too greatly. This builds into a fundamental flaw with the game; it's length.Rogue is a very good game in its own right, in fact it got better reviews than the much anticipated Assassin's Creed Unity. But it's only six sequences long instead of 12, with a final sequence serving as a prologue to Unity. This really does do it an injustice as the story is surprisingly good and I would have loved to see what it would have been had been a full twelve sequences. All in all a good romp for the remainder of us on the old consoles. Give it a go, but expect some similarity to Black Flag.

If it isn't broken. Don't fix it!
Recently bought assassin's creed Rogue, The game many players seem to dislike. However, My experience of the game must have been very different to most. To start with I was unsure whether or not I liked the assassin shay but as the story progressed i 'warmed' to him. His reasons for leaving the creed were right and just. It has been a very well scripted game so far, leaving me asking is this the moment he finally leaves? But i would not have guessed the reason for it! (A very nice historical twist might I add). The game isn't too similar to black flag as many suggested. The game play is different and a lot more enjoyable, Mixing in the best bits from across the previous range! The only down side to the game? It has left me wanting more as usual! But alas I am unable to continue as I lack ownership of an Xbox One :(

Great game
Whilst it does feel a little like a DLC for Black Flag, it is still an excellent game. Black Flag was my favourite AC and so the gameplay and combination of land and see combat and campaign is perfect. The game flows very well and has all the good parts of Black Flag. The sea combat is still amazing and with 3 different worlds to explore there is plenty to do despite the slightly shorter campaign. Storyline ties in well with other AC including the new AC Unity. The legendary ship battles are a lot more interesting than those in Black Flag however the last "epic legendary ship" is pretty difficult. Even with a fully upgraded ship you'll take quite a few attempts. All in all, a fantastic game which I would highly recommend to Xbox 360 or PS3 owners and all fans of Black Flag.

Decent game, good story, loads to do!
There is a lot to do in this game and the story is very interesting. However, there are so many elements in this game which make it a bit frustrating if not infuriating. I feel like once you've completed the story, you're fooled into thinking there's loads to do, when in reality it's a tonne of repetitive side activities. The achievements take a while to get and the story gets a bit tasking after a bit (as with all games in the AC series). If you're a fan of the Assassin's Creed series I recommend you buy this game, if not, don't bother until you've played a few before it, it wouldn't be a good first impression.

Fantastic game, bad platform.
An absolutely brilliant game providing the perfect continuation of black flag, excelling the promise shown in Unity in every way.The game superbly fills contemporary plot holes whilst being a far cry from the usual assassin takes on the Templars tale the franchise is used to.Unfortunately the game has not been released on next gen, forcing players of next gen consoles to return to sub-par graphics, made worse by the fact the game excels Unity in almost every aspect.

Not the worst AC
I was worried when the case said NTSC even though I've a PAL Xbox (UK) - but after trying it, it worked fine!Definitely worth playing if you're a fan of the series, especially if you loved Black Flag - they basically made Black Flag again with a few changes.I actually preferred this over Unity (although after all the glitches and frame drops I still haven't finished it...Glad I finally picked this up! :)
