Warm, Water Resistant, and Large
Just so there’s no confusion, I bought the Nemo Sonic 0° bag - Long. This is hands down the best sleeping bag I have ever used, let’s get that out of the way right off the bat. I took this bag to Montana for a November Elk hunt and was very glad I spent the money on a good bag. Lows each night ranged from 10°F to -10°F. We had an uninsulated tipi style tent with a small wood stove in it, and this bag kept me warm all night every night. (A quick side bar about the tent, the stove only stayed lit for about half an hour after we went to sleep, so my review is NOT based on conditions in a wall tent with a large stove or a legitimate heating source.) I wore base layers to bed, and had a pad with an R-value of around 4.2-4.3, and with this sleeping bag it was not an issue at all. I am about 6’1” and a relatively fit 230lbs, and I’m glad I went with the long bag. It allowed me a little extra room, and I put my puffy jacket in the foot box to take up the remaining space. This is a large bag, definitely enough room to sleep on your side if you want to. I never once felt claustrophobic like I have in other mummy style backpacking sleeping bags. There are a few features on this bag that shouldn’t be overlooked.. the vents are absolutely one of my favorite parts of this bag. Even on a 10°F night I felt the need to open them about half way to let some of the heat out. Second, the waterproof foot box is absolutely a life saver if you’re sleeping in a tent. The bag as a whole is very water resistant, but with 3 guys in one tent full of wet gear the condensation was horrible in the mornings, and I never once woke up wet or cold. The third really nice feature is the “baffle” (if you’d like to call it that) which sits right about at your shoulders. It separates the air between your body and your head which made a world of difference when it came to heat retention. My only complaint about the bag at all is that I don’t like where the small pocket for your cell phone, gps, etc. is located on the bag. I think it’s kind of an awkward spot, but it certainly wouldn’t have kept me from buying the bag. Obviously I am not suggesting anyone try this, but I am very confident that with puffy pants and a puffy jacket on, I could have slept in this bag at temps near -20°F without much of an issue. Overall, I think this bag is extremely versatile. I think it could realistically be used very comfortably any time the lows will be between -10°F and 40°F (open the vents near 40°). If you’re on the fence, invest the money into a high quality bag like this because no one wants a trip ruined due to poor sleep.

Nemo is skimping on the fill
Nemo and many other companies quality has declined in the recent years. This bag had significantly less fill in many areas compared to previous bags despite the same temperature rating. I suspect that the cause is because some of their earlier bags temp ratings weren't certified and were likely designed to over perform. Now that the temp ratings are certified, Nemo likely removed "extra" fill in areas that performed above the rating to save money. The quality of the down also seems to have decreased along with the quantity as the new down seems like more feather and less down (yes there is a difference).
