Upgrading from 1hp to 1.5hp
After a lot of research into electrical draw, filter GPM flow, and piping, I decided to upgrade my recently shot and old A.O. Smith 1hp motor, to an efficient Pentair 1.5hp pump. Because I have a rock waterfall, 4 jets, 2" piping, and an average sized residential swimming pool, my research consensus was that upgrading to a 1.5 motor would be perfectly fine. I'm most likely just going to run it a couple hours less that usual since the GPM flow rate will be higher...and more efficient. The piping work was pretty easy with my dremel-type utility cutter and some 2-part PVC cement from the store. Having my electrician buddy help with properly wiring it up and I will update this review with both noise level and flow rate change from my old motor. The motor did come with some torx-bit style dents in the side, but it looks like something from the manufacturer regarding quality control because I saw the same things in other photos on here as well. I don't think it's anything to worry about because it's just the metal housing and it didn't chip the paint either.Looks fine, but the shipper could have been a little more liberal with the foam packaging. There were a few points in the box where the motor/pump was touching bare box and wouldn't have had much dampening if dropped at that point. Here is my before and after.Update #1:After letting it run for 8hr per day for the last few days, everything seems to be fine. Noise level is much less, no buzzing noise like the dying motor had and I can only hear noise from water flow. Really not much and it's an improvement over the old A.O. Smith pump. The only problem I have now is that due to the slightly higher flow of water, I now have a very small leak coming from the filter seal and one of my valves after the filter. It's just pushing water a little faster and I may need to replace those parts, but it's not the fault of the pump... just identifying weak points.I will update again once I fix those leaks and will update on how it works during the heat wave of a Florida summer.

Great replacement pump for my pool
My old Pentair 1/2 HP WhisperFlo finally went out, screaming through its final hours. Looking on-line, I found this 3/4 HP for about $40 less than the 1/2 HP on Amazon so I decided to go the larger route. I don't have a very large pool (15 - 20K gallons) but we did have it redone last year and added a small waterfall, so I figured we could use the extra HP.Shipping - I was not thrilled when the package arrived in a very large box that looked like it had its fair share of abuse. When I opened the large box, there was a smaller box inside that contained the pump and sufficient packing insulation. All looked good once I opened it.Instructions - I have seen a few posts indicating that the instructions are not great and that the wiring information is missing. It is true that the directions are fairly generic, only indicating that you need to make sure that you install it wit the correct voltage (230 or 115) but the diagrams on the pump itself are very clear and easy to understand. When I removed my old pump, I could still see the wiring diagram on the label on the outside and could tell it was wired for 230. The new pump also had the diagram on the side that clearly explained how to change it from 115 to 230 with the simple turn of a dial. Mine came preset at 230, so I was good to go.Installation - Electrical was a piece of cake. 3 wires screwed right in and the instructions on the pump were very clear regarding the connections. The plumbing for me was also easy and I only needed about $7 worth of PVC and couplers to make the necessary adjustments. Granted, every setup is different to be mindful of where you make the cuts in the PVC if you have to cut your old one out. As I mentioned, this was a replacement for an earlier model Pentair so the setup was almost identical, almost. One difference was that the inlet on the new one was only 1 1/2" and on my older one it was 2". No big deal, a simple coupler reducer from 2" to 1 1/2" took care of it. The inlet on the new pump is also about a 1/2" lower than my old one which meant that I needed to either rework a lot of my plumbing or raise the pump. A couple pieces of tile under the new pump did the trick. All in all, I spent about an hour and a half cutting out my old one and installing the new.Performance - I may be biased because my old pump did not go quietly. It had been gradually getting louder over the last year and I did not realize how loud it was until I turned this thing on. Holy Crap! I had to lean over and touch it to make sure it was even on. I didn't realize a pool pump could actually be this quiet. Water flow is great and it primes itself beautifully (just fill it first). So far no issues with extreme heat as others had indicated.
