Nutshell: wonderfully warm base layer for 40-45 F temps
For size reference, I’m 5’3”, generally wear Small / size 2 or 4 depending on brand, style, etc. Bought a S in this and it fit fine. Definitely not ultra snug, rather pretty loose. At first I was really disappointed, thinking that as a base layer it was supposed to be like 2nd skin, and considered returning it but didn’t have time before leaving for a trip in a couple days. In the end, I’m happy about the fit. I think an XS would’ve felt too constrictive and the waistband definitely too uncomfortably snug. I had no trouble slipping on some jeans (regular/straight fit, not skinny leg or anything) or some rather thick/heavy-weight leggings over these - although I had to do a little tugging and pulling on these bottoms when trying to slide the leggings on to get the bottoms to stay in the proper position. The material is extremely thin, like hosiery. I wondered how it could possibly do its job of keeping me warm but it did its job to the fullest. Plus although it may have the appearance and thinness of hosiery, fortunately it FEELS nothing like hosiery. I wouldn’t have been able to tolerate that feel. But these bottoms are wicked soft and smooth, not at all scratchy or having that wire scouring-pad feel of hosiery. I also really liked that this was thin enough to take up very little space for packing as we were trying to travel light. I’m really glad I decided to keep it. The bottoms turned out to be fantastic for a cold weather vacation, worn as a base layer. I was happy as a clam wearing them almost every day during a 9-day trip in 40-45 F temps. I’ve always lived in balmy FL and have no clue how to dress properly for cold weather, but staying warm was a big deal for me to be able to enjoy the trip so I was really putting a lot of confidence in this article of clothing and it actually came through! It’s only a base layer - and a lightweight one at that - so to reiterate, naturally I had jeans or heavy leggings over it but honestly I think it was the base layer that made all the difference in being able to stay warm. I’m thrilled that it worked out. FYI I ordered the matching top (Terramar Women's Thermasilk Pointelle Scoop neck) with the same satisfactory result, as well as a MIDweight base layer set (32Degrees Women's Heat Thermal top and bottoms) for the slightly cooler days (30-40 F).

Classic silks thermals long underwear for winter
I bought two sets of long underwear for the season, these in oatmeal heather size medium, both top and bottom, and the Cuddl Duds Women's Thermal Long Sleeve Top & bottoms. This is a pretty classic set of long Johns. Like them a lot. I wear them under waterproof Patagonia pants out rowing on Gloucester Harbor. I am warm, cozy, and dry in them. I've already washed and dried them and they didn't seam to shrink. Folks' reviews complain of their being too thin and running. I am not experiencing that issue with these. They're supposed to be lightweight. And if yours ran, maybe you're running something scratchy along them. They shouldn't run. These are very seathrough. So they've got a sexy appeal to them too. So if you're on a little winter holiday getaway with your sweetie, these are kind of sexy in an unexpected kind of way, but maybe only would be considered sexy to folks who love winter outdoor sports and winter indoor recreation by the fireside.

Warm without bulk
Very thin but very warm. Adds warmth without bulk. Fit ischidden under your street clothes. Fabric is stretchy and soft. True to size

Lightweight and warm
There is nothing better than silk long underwear. It is as warm as wool or polyester but does not give me the rash that wool does nor the bulk that polyester does.

Any thinner and and you could strain soup through them
Let me be upfront with this first opinion: "Base layer" silk underwear is a crock. It's also a rip-off, IMO. $50-60 for something that I'm honestly afraid to wash because I'd expect them to dissolve in the water. But since I can't buy any others this time of year, apparently, I went ahead and gave in. I use silk long-johns to sleep in. My Reynaud's has crept up over the years and now involves my lower legs as well as my feet. Even using an electric blanket year-round (with my AC set no higher than 70 because my face is always hot ... an uncommon but annoying and uncomfortable flip side to Reynaud's, I've learned), my feet and legs are usually cold in bed. These did help keep my lower body warmer, but how long they will hold up? How long before a seam tears out, because the fabric is so thin and delicate? I really miss what I used to be able to buy: heavy silk long-johns, not polyester, not fleece, not cotton on the inside. Just well-made, heavy silk LJ, that don't cost a fortune. Used to at least be able to buy at a good discount after winter, but don't even find those deals at 3D stores or their online sites. And most that look/sound heavier, almost always come as a set with a long-sleeved top ... which I don't need and don't want to pay for. One final note: I recently also purchased a pair of Lands End LJ, sold here on Amazon. I ordered according to the table of measurements. They are about 2 sizes too big. When I wanted to exchange, none will be available for almost a YEAR!!! Can't return, can't exchange. Couldn't buy directly from the company either. Because of the size disparity, I ordered these the size I learned I needed in the other LJ (Lands End). They fit just about right, though they are a little long in the crotch and the waist is just a tiny bit tight. I am about 5'7", 185 pounds these days, and a bit short-waisted. I wear a 16 or 18 jeans or slacks, the 16 if there is any stretch in the fabric. I'm glad I've now got one pair for bed again but I won't buy another unless on sale. I'm used to paying a premium for almost everything sold by Amazon. I consider it like going to a convenience store (7-11, for example) for milk or feminine hygiene products needed in a pinch; you pay for that convenience. But the price for any and all of these so-called "base layer" silk long-johns really does seem exhorbitant.

Just does not fit
Too long and too tight in the waist. I ordered 2 pairs by mistake and they both need to go back. Very nice but just didn't

Like hosiery, but better
This item is like hosiery in appearance (not ultra snug though) and I wear them as such, i.e. with skirts or dresses, not under jeans or trousers. They have a nice pointelle structure and look good on legs (semi-transparent). Unlike hosiery (nylon etc.) they don't itch, don't form ladders (runs) , but due to their thinness won't have a long life. They are definitely not dog-safe (claws) and show some wear after several uses , especially where they rub against the waistband. Therefore I usually buy them when the price drops below 50. I wear them with skirts (kneelength) and my legs don't feel cold at temperatures of 8 centigrades (46 F) with them on.

Great purchase
Absolutely wonderful. They are so soft and so light they go under my jeans without adding any bulk. I could tell that I was warmer wearing this then without. I am extremely happy with my purchase.

Warm
I have used these thermals before. They are easy to wear and provide good warm. The pants are quick dry a great asset when travelling.
