Good cable tracer
Works well and has lasted

Great tester
Great product for the money. Made finding cables very easy. The only little problem with this was that the panel really needs to be isolated so there isn’t any interference picked up. A very useful tester.

Terrible.

Brilliant
This is a brilliant bit of kit, very easy to use and very sensitive, traced a wire right through two floors to where it had broken.

Does the job. Just.
Item is easy to use but you can’t short out a pair on the tip of the amplifier as it’s plastic. It’s also not very sensitive. The oscillator doesn’t indicate if it has been shorted out whilst the tone is on which would be very useful.

Invaluable when you need it, not the best one out there
At first I was not terribly impressed, thought I had wasted my money. However a few months down the line and it went from waste of money to being gold plated and fantastic. A real life saver. I am an gas engine engineer and had to trace 2 core wire out of a electrical control cabinet in a bundle of 15 wires, down conduit, where it then split into 4 different conduit going all over the engine, we are talking a 30ft x 10ft x 8ft (LxHxW) engine all cable tied together. An impossible task, but this little cheap plastic green tone generator did it, I was so thankful. I would not have been able to do it without this. I identified the cable, checked continuity and it was spot on. Fantastic. I can’t praise this enough today, it has earned its place in my van and it’s now a valuable bit of kit for electrical fault finding and tracing wires

Came with two empty batteries
Works well the minus 1 star is because it arrived with two batteries in original packaging but they were both empty so I had to go buy new batteries straight away that than makes the product more expensive as it's sold practically without batteries.

Does work but
As someone else wrote, at first you think you have bought a load of rubbish but two new 9v batteries and you’re off tracing cables. Have used them a few times now without issue.

I had a problem where there was unusual wiring feeding into a box of light switches. A 14/3 cable (typically used for 3-way light switches) was wired to two different switches at the box - red traveller was connected to one switch, black to another switch. The switch with the black wire also had a burn mark on a terminal. Since I did not know the state of the wiring, I needed a way to diagnose and trace where these cables were running. The Extech TG20 did the trick. With it I was able to trace signal of the red traveller through my joists and drywall to my pendant lights (the signal was actually on a black wire on the pendant... which means I have a hidden junction somewhere in my ceiling), while the black went to the fixture above the dining table. I was able to put the wiring all back knowing what is happening and that there wasn't going to be a hazard. I have since used the TG20 to test a lightbulb, a lamp switch, and terminals on a 12V transformer. Other tools being sold on Amazon included features I didn't need (which could break), and those products seemed to have reliability issues too. Pleasantly surprised the Extech TG20 is made by FLIR (says on the package) which I didn't know prior to purchasing. Nice bonus. TIP 1: To trace a single wire, clip to wire and clip to a grounded wire and not the device box. The tone when clipped to the ground wire is much stronger than if clipped to the box. TIP 2: TURN OFF the main power before doing any work. You do not want to connect anything to live wires. If you are tracing wires through your electrical panel, you want your branch circuits ON but your main service OFF. TIP 3: Connect the TG20 to a foot of cable and play "Find the TG20" with the kids.
