Cambridge English Pronouncing Dictionary

I would have bought this fantastic book years ago if I'd known it included American pronunciation as well as UK . Too bad they don't mention that on the cover. (If I'd had a physical copy in hand of course, I would have noticed.) I can't wait to compare the pronunciations to those given in my Kenyon and Knott Pronouncing Dictionary from 1953. Of course there've been many pronunciation changes and additions to diacritical marks since then. The print used for IPA and diacritical marks is a bit on the small size, but the word entries are bolder and in red ink, which makes it quick and easy to look up words.

Loving the new book but I hate AMAZON

I bought this book for use in a Voice and Diction class, after having used the website. (In truth, if you use the website, you don't really need the book.) I like that the book provides standard American, as well as British, pronunciations. The only reason I'm giving it less than four stars is that for some sounds it uses IPA symbols that seem to be non-standard. This use is consistent, though, so it's easy enough to work around.

I use the Cambridge English Pronouncing Dictionary (CEPD) and the Longman Pronunciation Dictionary (LPD) in developing materials for elementary students. I find the syllabification in CEPD probably matches American English better than the LPD. For example, it starts the 2nd syllable before t in the words waiter and waitress. In contrast, the LPD starts the second syllable after the t in waiter and after the r in waitress. On the other hand, the LPD gives more and probably better examples of the problems with the "ng" cluster. The LPD also gives graphs showing the pronunciation versus age of the user. It also includes plots of vowel production for American English.

This was purchased as used but aside from minor wear marks on the cover - it is perfect!!

As a speech coach, speaker and MC, it is important to pronounce words not just as you think they should sound, but as they should actually sound. This dictionary helps with that.

The book came with a hard cover, smelled like fresh leaves and in great condition. Love it!! It also has the cardinal vowel firgure at the back

It's a basic dictionary for anyone looking at buying this book. It's a great tool for anyone doing IPA work or Dialect classes, but overall, it's just a normal dictionary.

I received the book promptly, but its condition was poor. The front cover had a noticeable bend, making it unsuitable as a gift.
