Live At Riviera Theatre In Chicago, October 23th, 1995

Renaissance are a group with a very individual sound - I can't think of another group that you can compare them with and they are very good live. The use of the wonderful Annie Haslam's voice as not just a vocalist but also as a musical instrument is, I think, unique.Minus points for this CD are the shortness (only 40 mins) and the fact that tracks 4-11 are just a medley of parts of the songs and you would have to be a real connoisseur to identify when the songs change. Thus there are, in reality, only 5 tracks which is how the CD plays, the medley being track 4.The plus points are live versions of "Northern Lights" and "Flight" that are new to me plus an absolutely stonking version of "Ashes are Burning" that provides the encore to the live performance.** There is now a video of this live performance on YouTube **The "Live at Carngie Hall" album is the preferred live performance but this CD should not be ignored.

Really captures the smashing pumpkins live sound from that era turn it up loud !

I must admit to being dissapointed with the cd. At just over 40 mins in length its a mere snapshot of the band. Far better is the "Live at Carnegie Hall" recording. having said that, Annie is in fine voice and the band is lovely and tight.

This CD dates from a time very late during the existence of Renaissance, after the publication of their 'Camera, Camera'. This was an album that thoroughly disappointed me about after buying it on vinyl. For this reason I never bought it as a CD.I was tricked into buying Live in Chicago by a remark somewhere on this website listing Mick Taylor in the line up. Those who heard him playing live with Bob Dylan - not to mention the obvious band - will know why this would have turned this recording into a 'must have'. And as it was not unusual for bands of a similar reputation to produce boring and meaningless studio albums while at the same time still delivering exciting live performances - especially in cooperations with special guests - I thought I'd give this one a chance. You guessed it already, I suppose. It was not THE Mick Taylor, rather a keyboarder named Mike Taylor in one spot of the liner notes and Mick Taylor (to make him appear more mysterious?) in another one.While Annie Haslam's voice was still magnificent and the material was taken from their better times there are actually good live recordings of most - all? I did not check each title - of these available on official live albums. As the playing is not too inspired on this one you can do very well without it.Similar live recordings very often fill out nearly the whole CD reaching playing times of 75-80 mins. Another expectation that was missed after 40 mins. But this CD teaches that even this can be too much.And now we come to the killing point: It all sounds like a medium wave home recording - Renaissance Live on the Moon recorded in NASA studios would have been in a high end sound quality compared to this one.Not listenable! This could only have been compensated by the real MT. But, he was clever enough to stay away.What really remains is the jewel case - not damaged during shipment. But there are cheaper options to get one.
