A tool one does not really need but a tool that will save time & frustration when needed!
This is one of those tools that most people won't need to use that often so might not justify buying it. However, when the need arises one of these heads will save a great deal of time, effort and frustration trying to improvise a means of extracting broken screws. This purpose-made set of extraction heads is to be used in conjunction with a 3/8 socket set ratchet.Really simple to use: when you have a stripped or broken screw head, just drill a pilot hole in the top of the screw to be removed [size dependent on the size of the extractor to be used] then insert the correct size of extractor into the pilot hole and then apply the wrench head from the socket set. Apply downward pressure and start turning the wrench counterclockwise to remove the screw. If one is careful it is possible to remove the screw without doing any damage to the surrounding wood. The reason I only gave it four star is that I just cannot imagine why I would be trying to use the large sixes of screw extractions heads contained in this kit. For me, it would have been better to have more of the smaller sizes.

In a previous existence I was a marine engineer - eventually Chief Engineer - before I hung up my ear defenders and moved ashore. And if one thing marine engineers know about is frozen nuts. Especially if working in the North Sea in winter....That combination of extreme heat, sea water and tens of thousands of mild steel fittings means we learn just about every way possible to get a pipe apart. And that often means flogging nuts and bolts that have rusted tight off. There are stages to this. Stage one, a couple of spanners. Stage two, put a long bar on the spanners. Stage three, use a 6 foot pipe on spanners.By now things are getting a bit desperate so Stage four might be getting the oxy-acetylene cutting gear out and heating up the fittings. That rather depends upon what's around the pipe or in it.At some point if you are dealing with a blind hole with a threaded bolt it's going to shear. You just have to accept it. That's where these things come in. Shear the head off the bolt then drill out as big a hole as you dare before knackering the threads and use the screw extractor. If you have drilled the hole big enough it will work. And that's the trick. There's no point in drilling out a small hole and expecting the extractor to do it's magic. If the long bar and heat didn't work, neither will the extractor. By drilling a large hole you allow the bolt to collapse in a bit when you put the extractor in and that will allow you to remove the frozen bolt. And this set makes it a tad easier than the old school extractors because you can use it with a ratchet bar once you've got it moving. These are well made - really well made - and cover just about every size you need in normal life. You don't come across many M160mm bolts ashore...They are strong and the cutting thread is just right to get a good grip. I didn't have an old steam pipe to try this out on so I forced a bolt into a bit of steel in my workshop and then cut the head off and then drilled it. Worked a treat.Stored in a nice case to keep everything neat and tidy and as a garage set this would be invaluable.

Dommage.
