picture shows shoulder strap. Does it come with the case?

No it does not , I was disappointed when I received it. I understand it was not in the description after going back and reading it but they should also have the correct picture. I hate feeling like I have to read a book to buy something anymore but BUYER BEWARE seems to be more applicable nowadays.

Good for important documents?

It’s actually great for documents, which is why pelican makes the 1437 version that comes with file bars for hanging file folders. Or you can just put a large accordion file folder inside the standard 1430 to organize files.

The Pelican 1430 case looks to be tapered in, are the posted internal dimensions measured at the bottom or at the mouth of this case?

I looked at one of my 1430 cases and found the bottom width to be about 12 mm. ( about 1/2 inch) smaller than at the top. This is not that much taper, but some is probably needed to be able to slide the case off its mold when it is initially manufactured. I think you will really like this case, it is very well made, and quite sturdy. The latches are strong, although I prefer the latches on Pelican's Storm Cases more, however the storm cases are not as durable as their standard case, ( in my opinion, with thinner plastic at the rim). Please put an address label & tel. # inside the case so it is easily returned if misplaced. Good luck.
