Great for owners who didn’t get a MBA

I’ve been reading a lot of books on finance lately for the small business audience. Jim’s book, short, sweet, human and right on the money, is probably the one I’ll recommend to any entrepreneur who hates numbers but needs to manage their finances.Yeah there are a few numbers here and there, but they are simple and understandable, and always used to great purpose, and not thrown around to impress the reader on the author’s mastery of the subject.With the addition of a “workbook”, this little book will become even more valuable to ,any entrepreneurs struggling in the number jungle but too busy or petrified to tackle the beasts head on.

I started my business twenty five years ago but it was another five-or-so years until I started actively using my financial statements to manage it. Once I started, my world changed, all of a sudden I had the tools I needed to understand why I was underachieving and what I could do about it. Like Jim says in his book, most small businesses have the wherewithal to generate the numbers, it’s compiling them and then understanding and using them that sets apart the successful businesses from the unsuccessful ones. I’ve never seen a anything on this subject before for small business owners, Jim’s book should be required reading for all of us. I’m giving Jim’s book a solid five stars, if there were more stars to award, I’d give them too.

This small effort turns your Balance Sheet into a potent management tool. This is a simple and quick read that will have a big impact on the control and understanding of the health of your business. Jim has taken a complex, valuable and often overlooked topic and made it easy to understand and utilize.

This is a great book. I am currently working with my first financial mentor to help my business. I have learned as much if not more in the one hour reading this book than the 10 hours over the past three months with the mentor.It is very concise, focused and easy implemented.

As the longtime owner of a successful and growing small business and a fan of using financial statements to manage it, Jim Schell’s book struck a huge chord with me. His book should be required reading for anyone and everyone who have ever, or will ever, start a small business of their own. It’s impossible to measure the progress of your business without using your financial statements and you won’t be able to fix its problems either. Jim has obviously “been there and done that” in the small business and entrepreneurial world, and his book hits the mark in outlining how to best utilize your financials. I can only imagine the difference it would make in Canada’s economy if every small business owner read this book. It boggles the mind.

Short and very sweet; as a financial coach to creative entrepreneurs, I know how much they love numbers (not!), thankfully this book is an easy read and very informative. I will definitely be recommending it to my clients.
