The One Year Book of Josh McDowell's Family Devotions: A Daily Devotional for Passing Biblical Values to the Next Generation

My family has thoroughly enjoyed this family devotional. We try to do it once a week after dinner (even though it’s a daily devotional) and we usually choose a topic pertinent to anything we may be currently experiencing (not necessarily the page for the date). It takes about 15 minutes and the stories and discussion provoked great conversation. My kids are 12, 11 and 7 and they all contribute at their level of understanding. If you’re looking for something to deepen your family bond and reinforce your faith this is an excellent devotional.

A previous reviewer stated that the language of the book is cheesy, and I have to agree. Every dialogue sentence has something hanging off it (think "Lisa whispered softly", "Chad stated happily", "Misha looked wide-eyed") and they become annoying. I read the stories aloud to my family and I end up condensing the sentences and dropping the fluff for a better flow.We also encountered some weird character names that leave my husband screaming, "Argh! Just change the name to Steve or something! This is ridiculous!" Weird names are interesting to me, but they distract my kids who spend the lesson saying the name and giggling.But the Bible verses are great, the questions are way more than just rehashing basic reading comprehension (I can't say that for some adult Bible studies out there!) and I'm glad we're using this! My 8 year old can follow along and answer the questions, but it's over the head of my 4 year old. It's definitely a book for ages 7+ and only takes 10-15 minutes.

The book has been appropriate for my 9 & 11 year old. The lessons and supporting scriptures are grounding my family in Christ. This book has been our source of closure for every evening.

Love love love this devotional!! Our family reads it every night with the kids and it has down to earth life lesson scenarios that we can read and discuss afterward. Highly highly recommend!!I even buy this book as gifts for my friends because I feel everyone benefits from the basic lessons.Thank you Josh McDowell for writing this book!!

Great resource for family's that have a strong conviction about keeping God first in their home. The stories are well written and entertaining, and the questions/activities at the end are great for reflecting on the message of the story. I would suggest this for kids 12+ as some of the stories (depending on how how exposed your children are to certain concepts, ie,drunkenness) may not be suitable to younger children. All in all a great supplental tool for the family

We really like this devotion and look forward to reading it every evening after supper. The devotions are relevant and the discussions are nice for the whole family.

I really enjoyed this devotional and it was a great center piece to my family's Bible Study time in the evenings. The stories were clear and simple enough for my 8-year-old son to understand and relate to. yet my husband and I were still able to find a connection with them and our own lives. Personally, I like to have "challenges" or suggestions for things to do the next day so that you can take your lesson with you and still remember them through the next day until you are able to read the next day's devotional. Over all, it was very effective in it's purpose of leading my family's Bible discussions each night.

My family loves this. We try to read the daily page each night around dinner time. At the end of each day/page is either a prayer or a discussion question or the like. It always offers a great message and each day is only a page long. It is a great way to take us into the evening time and for our family to have a few minutes discussion. We also bought the Youth Devotional.

Good for a family with pre-teen children; has an American-culture 'flavour' to the book.
